Hi, is it common for Fender to have used a "sticker" logo for the Fender Telecaster '52 Re-Issues? I recently acquired a FSR '52 (Black 100 series-made 2004 in Corona, Calif factory) ... I love it ... just sings with tone ... great to play ... but the headstock logo is a sticker that has become .... ahhh "sticky" for lack of a better word. I started to gently clean it and it started to come off ... is this common? I have a 97 Tele Plus and a Clapton strat and the logo is embedded "under" the lacquer finish ... just wondering if this is a common thing? I've never come across it in the many Fender electrics I've owned before ... ???

Also there is no serial number on the headstock anywhere... the only number is on the back neck plate. Actually, now that the logo is washing off the headstock, there's actually nothing that says Fender anywhere on the guitar ...

Yep - Fender used waterslide decals placed over the finish on the headstock from their very first instruments until circa 1968; it seems like that was when they started putting the decals on under the finish.

Since your Tele is a reissue it has a true-to-1952 waterslide decal. They are fragile and as you have discovered they do come off.

I do recall one "brand new from the factory" Custom Shop Relic '60 Strat that had the decal all but scraped off as part of its "relicing". That was right out of the box from Fender; I was there when they unboxed it. So this isn't altogether uncommon, but it may well be an issue if you ever try to sell your Tele. As long as you keep it, you can just say you're relicing it yourself.

Any idea if you can order them from Fender?

Oh god no. The piracy would be worse than it already is. I know getting replacement necks and stuff IS possible by jumping through hoops to prove authenticity, but I doubt decals are gettable.

Just a sidenote-
back when I worked at a Music store in Iowa, a old man brought in a Fender Esquire that had been stored in the barn with no case for 20+ years. I set out to rebuild the thing for him, and ordered a ton of replacement parts from a place called Silver Strings in Memphis Tn, including a authentic Fender waterslide decal. This was in the mid/late 80's, so things have changed by now I'm sure, but at one time, they were available.

If you go to an authorized Fender Dealer/repair facility they can order it from Fender and replace it for you. Hope that this helps.
ABS :D
