Hello,

I'm considering buying a Custom FMT, and was just wondering what people on here think of them. I've read plenty of reviews and heard very few negatives about them. My main concern is that they are made in Korea or Indonesia? And from my experience, guitars made in those places are hit and miss.

In an ideal world, I would go and play one before buying. But the nearest decent guitar shop to me is over 2 hours drive away. So I'll probably order online. Just don't wanna end up with a bad one.

Another thing to consider is that I tend to play in D standard tuning, with a heavy string gauge. How does the bridge handle heavier strings? And what are the pickups like etc...?

Any information would be much appreciated.

Cheers.

I've had mine for a couple of years now and play it in D also with 11's and have never had a problem. If you can't make it to a store to play one then make sure the site you order from allows for returns without a hassle. I've played a few of these and they were all up to snuff but, each one is different and this particular guitar doesn't really play "like a fender", so make sure spend some time with it before you throw away the box. Overall I think you'll be happy with it. I know I am with mine. Although, I went with the Spalted top.

Thanks for the response. And that's a beautiful guitar. Mmmmmm...

Anyway, That's just what I wanted to hear really. I also use 11s. Although I was thinking about moving up to 12s, with a wound G string. Just hope that the intonation will be ok.

Cheers again.

A very good friend had one of those for several years. We gigged together for a spell while he was using it.
Although I never actually played it myself I did notice he was almost able to get some classic Fendery tones from it,
or at least a kind of facsimile. Mostly though it sounded very much like the humbucker guitar that it is especially
with medium to high gain settings in the drive stage.. Not quite LP territory but in a similar ball park. He told
me it felt good in his hands like a regular Tele.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Forgot to mention, these are made in Korea. (I put the quality just a hair behind the U.S. and Japan guitars). I didn't mean to give you the wrong idea either about it not playing like a fender. It is the same scale and body shape as a Tele and the neck profile isn't too far off from some other Tele's I've played, but the fact that the neck is bound and has a heavy lacquer on the back really does make quite a difference. It is also mahogany from neck to body, so tonally you're never going to make it sound like a '52 RI but you can get some convincing single coil sounds from the '59 and Pearl Gates (one of my absolute favorite pickups, for any type of guitar I've tried it in so far) with the push/pull coil tap.

As far as the 12's I would check out 11's with the wound G first.... works for me.

...I'm also pretty sure all guitars look incredible in those G&G cases. Worth every penny.

Cool. Thanks a lot for the response folks. I'm definately going to get one in the next couple of days. Can't afford the spalted maple version though, unfortunately. It's a fair bit more expensive. But I like the flame maple a lot anyway. So now it's just a choice between the 'black cherry burst' (red) or 'amber. Tough one really, because they're both very nice. Decisions decisions.
