I was looking for an American Telecaster either Candy Apple Red or Chrome Red with a maple neck. The online stores don't have anything. There is the G. E. Smith Artist model in Dakotoa Red. But I did not want an Artist or Signature model.

Not much of anything on Craig's List or Ebay either.

I finaly found a new one at a combination pawn shop and music store that was a Fender dealer.

Are they just popular or they don't make that many?

Could be because not every color is offered for every guitar and Fender hasn't made an American in that color for a while. The closest you'll come right now is Cherry burst (my favorite but I have one so I'm biased) unless you go to one of the artist models.

I really don't know how to answer that. I assume it's because red is pretty popular - I wanted a Chrome Red but instead I got a Midnight Wine. Which is a good color by the way.

I had a Standard Strat in midnight wine. It was OK, but it was a little boring and not what I had in mind for the classic Strat color.

I went to ReRanch and bought thier Sonic Blue laquer plus a clear coat. I refinished the Midnight wine in Sonic Blue. Came out quite nicely.

You could probably do the same to get the red you're looking for. It's not terribly hard to do.

The mexican teles are really good, have you tried one? You can get your color choice that way, and even save like over 500 dollars, so not really anything you'd miss. Try one out. And if you have your heart set on an american model you can always refinish it, or even have someone do it for you to keep from messing up the guitar.
