I've got a 52 reissue Tele and it's got a really nasty hum when I'm not in contact the bridge, strings, etc. Any one have a similar problem and what did you do to fix it? I did'nt look under the hood yet, I thought maybe someone here could tell me what might be a good place to start.

Start with checking all the grounds, and the jack connections.

Then see if any positive pickup wires are shorted anywhere or touching placed they shouldn't.

Your bridge pickup base plate sounds like it is O.K. ( being it is the bridge and strings connection to ground) as when you touch the strings the noise quiets.

If you touch a metal part of the guitar and noise stops or is reduced, then it is properly grounded. If the noise increases, then it is not. You may need to get the guitar shielded.

Thanks guys. This isn't your normal 60 cycle hum, it's nasty! Thanks again.

Do you get the same hum if you play elsewhere...a friend's house or another part of your house?

I had a bad hum on my Les Paul. I got it shielded and it is now as quiet as a mouse. My new tele--a 52 AVI--had the same issue. I just took it in to get shielded.

There is something in my house or near my house that is causing it. I can't figure out what it is.

Thanks Bluemoon, I think I must have the same problem you had. I might have to try shielding.

Don't shied your guitar: fix the problem before. You must have a bad ground connection.
or bad solder on ground.

First , be sure the amp is ok. Try another amp or guitar. No overdrive pedal : have you the noise ?

Second, is your tele is original ? no mod inside, change pickups or anything else ? If yes; check for bad connection

Do you use pedal overdrive between your guit and amp ? That make more noise on single coils pickup

yep, that should be the LAST resort.

(cavity) shielding sucks the tone out.

How so. I don't buy it.

Effects in the magnetic field of the pickups alters the tone.

Sometimes you can find the source of RFI/EMI if it's strong enough. Take a portable AM radio and tune it down on the lowest end of the scale and walk around the house. If it's strong you should pickup a buzz near the culprit.

Fluorescent lights are bad and those touch lamps if you have them.
