I've got a mid 90's James Burton in Frost Red/Black Chrome and have been told these were produced in the custom shop. Is this true? Were a lot of these produced as I don't see them very often? Also A.R. Duchossoir, in his book, The Fender Telecaster, refers to these as early pre-series. What does this refer to?

Skydog, I think the MIA JB Teles (of which there have been a few versions over the years - solid color like yours, black & gold paisley, red paisley flames over black, etc.) were/are made in Corona but not in the Custom Shop. The cheaper JB Tele is Made In Mexico.

If it was made in the Custom Shop it must have a Custom Shop stamp somewhere, with an "appropriate" serial number and a certificate inside the case (that is, if you bought it "complete", in case you got second-hand).
