All my Teles have EB 10s as does my SSS Strat and the Yamaha semi-hollow. Here I try to balance playability with getting a bit more tone out of 10s than 9s. I sometimes tune down to Eb when by myself but the couple of people I jam with always play in E, so it's back up to standard for that.

I have 9s on the HSS Strat, the SG and the D'Armond M75 -- that is, the guitars I use when I'm playing what I try to pass off as rock. In that case, I'm using a bit higher volume and I'm slightly less concerened about depth of tone.

I have 11 "jazz chromes" on the Guild X150 but that's a full size and I use that for a vintage (e.g., Big Band era) tone. I'm not sure if 9s and 10s even existed back that far but string bending and other rock/blues techniques would have been rare. In this case, the 11s resemble the 12s (or so) probably really used back then but with a nod to playability for me.

I have been using D'Addario 8-38s since they have been available and swear by them.I know that a lot of people think that they are "wimpy" strings and can't produce enough tone but I do extreme bending and find that the 8s allow for far bigger bends without compromising the tone. BTW I do a lot of Hendrix covers and use 8-38s on all my guitars and find that they stay in tune better and hold their newness longer than any other strings I've tried.

Well, I broke an A string last night playing the .009's and decided to try some Ernie Ball Regular Slinky's, .010's. I must say, the tone difference is noticeable. I'm playing through a Line 6/Bogner Spidervalve amp and the bottom end is much more with the .010's. The playability is almost identical and actually feels great. I know my Jim Root's came with .009's standard but I'm using these .010's in E flat tuning and so far, it seems to be the ticket. :o

I use ernie ball hybrid slinkies on my telecaster, they're awesome for drop-d and all that. I play a lot of metal on telecasters, and anyone who says you can't is a douche.

I use D'Addario 10's on all of my electrics and Martin 12's on my acoustic. I'm looking for some strings for my classical (want nylon again) and for my Takamine 12 string acoustic/electric. If anyone has ideas on those two, I'd appreciate it.

Also, I've been wondering about going up to 11's on maybe my tele Custom II and my Hamer. Anyone have any ideas on how it may effect tone and sustain only going up one size?

I use 11s on all my Teles...I find bigger strings usually improve the tone and just feel better for me, though your results may vary...

I'm going back and forth between .009's and .010's. I've been playing more E flat tunings and the 9's are cool but the 10's stay in tune just a bit better. I play mostly alt/rock/metal type stuff. Just wondered what you guys are using. I'm playing Jim Root Teles with EMG 81/60's. 8)

After 20 years of playing i still cant decide between the two gauges.
Last it was 10,s but presently 9,s but nearly always vintage dean makleys

I like Curt Mangan, (Pure Nickel) .09's on my MIM Nashville Tele, same brand .10's on my MIM Players Strat...Great tone & playability, + they last longer than many others I've tried in the past,(20+yrs.) Their Acoustic Phosphor Bronze strings are excellent, as well. Try em, whatever guage you prefer,(it's subjective) it's worth the 5 or 6 bucks to find out. Good Luck, & Keep It Turned Up To 11!! ;}

Strings.......you would this it would be a strait forward thing right?

It took me years to settle on what i use, and i use it on every guitar i have (except the acoustic).

D'Addario XL 9.5's.
They play like 9's but will bend and stay in tune like 10's.
