Hi,

so the other guitarist in my band is looking at some teles and came across a squier tele and was wondering if there is a Fender version of it.

Here is a link to the guitar

he likes the tele shape but not the twangy tone, know any ways of getting a good rock/punk from a tele?

from past experiences with teles i have only been able to get almost high pitches twangy tones from tele when i crank the distortion, i was using a very old jcm 800, dident really give me the bass coming through...

Why did this make me chuckle?

I am sure a few artists may have suggestions.
Joe Strummer (the clash)
Jimi Hendrix (Purple Haze and Hey Joe)
Jeff Beck
Jimmy Page (the entire first Led album)
and many, many more.

Technically Squiers are Fenders since they are made by FMIC. :D

I get a pretty massive sound out of my standard series with 11s on it.

maybe try the john 5 models or a tele deluxe? As for getting good rock tones out of a tele, I put a humbucker in the neck postiton of my mim standard and it sounds great. Very beefy. Although to be honest I love that gritty, sharp bridge tone you get from a tele. Great for thrash metal. Hope I helped.

This made me laugh too, because of course the punk music and lifestyle have a strict set of rules that must be adhered to in order to even be considered to be punk. This, of course, is because following the rules and blindly doing what everyone else does, with no individuality of any whatsoever is what punk is all about...

And if you believe that, I got this lovely beachfront property on the Gulf Coast thats not covered in oil for sale....

The whole "ya gotta do it this way to be Punk" makes me smile too. I was around in the early days of "punk" and the whole thing was that THERE WERE NO RULES. You pretty much just needed to be disgruntled and a bit pissed off. Now it's more about fitting the mold. It's the same in most music genre's though.

If you refer to the usual "distorted punk" tone, that's more a matter of having an amp with good distortion or a decent pedal, not the guitar model in particular. Any single-coil Tele with distortion and the right EQ will sound hugely chunky.
