I've narrowed my tele choice down to the Highway 1 v. the Standard Tele. Both are MiA. I'm a total noob so i was wondering if anyone can tell me the differences between these two Teles. There's about a $200.00 difference in price and I can't tell why (other than i think the finish on the American Standard is nicer). Are the pickups on the Standard (American Tele single coil pickups) better than the ones on the Highway 1 (2 Hot Tele® Single-Coil Pickups with Alnico 3 Magnets)? Are the different saddles significant? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I happen to own both of the teles you're interested in. They BOTH are spectacular and you can't go wrong with either. I would suggest to do a line by line comparison from the "specs" page on the Fender site. But more importantly, play both if it's possible. There are some subtle differences between the two (besides the finish) and one is the weight. My American Standard is the Vintage White and my HW1 is in Daphne Blue. (MIM in sunburst). Good Luck. 8)

Wow, nice rigs. I've done a side-by-side of the specs on Fender, but not sure of the differencces in the pickups between the Highway 1 and the American Standard. Both offer the color combo i want (vintage white with rosewood fret board), so it just comes down to which has the better pickups. I tend to like the finish on the HW1 because it'll breathe and age better.

Thx. IMO, the pups in the American Standard seem to be a little stronger/sharper, not that the pups on the HW1 lack anything. Also, because of the HW1 finish, it seems to resonate the sound better/longer than the Amer. Stan., not that there is anything wrong with the sound from the Amer Stan. I also replaced the standard bridge plate and saddles on the HW1 with a Joe Barden bridge plate & brass saddles (very pleased). check www.joebarden.com
Not sure if I helped you at all. 8)

That's exactly the info/input i was looking for. Big time thanks. I've been wavering between the two, but am leaning toward the HW1 and switching out the steel saddles for the very cool brass. Thanks again for the advice and input.

I don't think you'll be sorry at all deciding on a HW1, it really is a fine guitar. I started with the MIM, to make sure I was going to continue to play and I am still playing. So, then I decided I wanted the 6 saddle american and a vintage looking bridge w/ brass saddles as well. I played just about every Tele available and just because the price tag is high, it doesn't mean it is what you like. IMO, the Amercan standard & HW1 are top of the line models. 8)

my understanding is that both are made in the USA. Are the bodies and quality of the build the same on yours?

Yes, they both are made in the USA, and I found that they both maintain the same high quality craftsmanship. The necks have a thin coating which makes for a non-sticky, super smooth & fast neck (unlike the 52 vintage). Both bodies show awesome finishes, high quality and everything fits perfect. The cable jacks are nice and tight (unlike my MIM), the switches are not loose and the vol & tone control knobs are of high quality as well. If you can get to a store and check them out, you'll see what I mean.

Thanks again for all your help Nic. I'll let you know which one I get but it'll probably be the HW1.
