Go with the American Standard if you play clean. Go with the American Special if you play with mostly distortion.

Why do you say this? Does the American special have hotter pups?
I am mostly looking for the tele best for blues and rock. I don't really care about twang.

Yes, the American Special has the Texas Special pickups which are hotter than the Alnico V's in the Standard. For me there is no getting around it. The Texas Specials are better with distortion, but the Alnicos are better clean.

I am sorry for my ignorance, but can anybody tell me what the Grease Bucket Circuitry is?

The Grease Bucket is merely a capacitor and resistor that allows the volume control to be turned down without rolling off the high frequencies. Cost to have done on any guitar is about $1.00 in parts and a hour or less to solder the components.

Also, another difference between the American Standard and American Special Tele's, the special has the SAME neck as the Highway One. This neck has HUGE frets, very tall and wide. Personally, I do not like them. Some guys swear by super jumbo size frets, but I prefer medium jumbos or even the vintage style that are lower. The American Standard Tele has the med. jumbo frets that most Fender guitars have, unless it's specified differently.

I have only played the american special in the store, not bad really. I thought the quality was very good, although I think the american has one quality feature that makes it just a little better, and that is the hand rolled edges.
For me, I don't think there is anything much better than an American Standard, it is "THE" model that everything else was modeled after. It's all about the player, there is a Jim Campilongo video where he is playing an american special through a gdec (right here on the Fender site), and he makes it sound amazing. My point is, in the right hands, a pro can make anything sound great.

I would suggest, if you can, play them both. And go with the one that "feels" right to you. Which ever one you get, I can't imagine you'd be anything less than very happy. I personally avoid the custom shop/reliced/vintage re-issue hype. An american special or american standard will deliver a killer tone for blues and rock.
The only thing I changed on mine was, I replaced the stock tuners with Fender Deluxe Locking Tuners. For me, it was a nice improvement.

good luck!!!!
