I can't decide which one I want. Other then the guitar case does the American special use cheaper parts?
Which one would be better for Hard Rock?
I will be testing both out soon but wanted to see what others thought as well.

Here's a pretty decent side by side comparison on the Fender site -

American Standard. Am Special is just a Highway 1 with poly finish and tex specials.

personally, I think the Am. Standards pickups are lifeless.
I may have a bias opinion though, since I just picked up a American Special Tele.

As always, take your amp to the guitar store and try out both of them, one will fell and sound better than the other, take the one you like better.

More money doesn't always mean more bang for you buck.

Hello,

The Texas Specials and the Greasebucket circuitry are standard features on the American Special Telecaster.

Fender offers both the pickups and tone circuit as an upgrade kit for any vintage Tele freak looking for the traditional Texas-style country twang without that muffled tone.

Sorry, there's no product link for the Greasebucket.

I own an am standard strat and an am special. Apart from a slightly more comfortable neck (just shape wise, not finish wise) I'd definitely say the build quality is great for both guitars.

I have an American Series (American Standard circa 2004). It's simply one of the finest guitars I have ever owned.

I faced this choice myself a while ago and picked the American Special. Had more of the features I was looking for. (I'd have ended up wanting to mod the American Standard to be more like the special which is stupid.)

Build quality is about the same so why not choose based on whichever one plays better and makes the sounds you want?

I played em both side by side today and the standard is way nicer then the special in my opinion. At least on the examples I saw at guitar center. The fit and finish of the standard blew away the special. Maybe I just saw a good standard and a bad special.

Go with the American Standard if you play clean. Go with the American Special if you play with mostly distortion.
