You could stick a humbucker on a fishing pole and get a heavy tone. When I think of Telecaster, I do not think of humbucking pickups... I think of single coils.. but that is just me.

+1

The whole "let's put humbuckers in the bridge position of Fender guitars" discussion is getting old. I just don't understand the mentality that compels people to buy a great new instrument -- a classic -- in order to modify it into an unrecognizable state.

The only Telecasters that should have humbuckers are the '72 models: the Custom (neck), the Deluxe (two) and some of the Thinlines (two).

I actually think its a great Idea. I would love to have a Tele with some JB's, PAF's, P-90's, or even (and please don't give me crap since they are gibson's) Burstbuckers in them.

You get the tone you're looking for, but the playability, feel, and craftmanship of a Fender.

After rereading my post, I've come to the conclusion that I clicked "submit" rather hastily: I neglected to mention the Keith Richards-esque PAF (or Burstbucker) in the neck. The essential point I was attempting to make (and continue to maintain) is that bridge humbuckers on a Telecaster seem to spoil the whole point of getting a Tele -- the wonderful, single-coil bridge pickup sound.

Apologies.

No apologies needed vulkan! Telecasters are amazing guitars and have their own bright tone

I probably was a little bitter in my post... It's been a long day....

The way I look at it, its your guitar & you need your need from her.

I think adding a bucker on the neck opens up the sound because the single coils are pretty thin. Although Ill never change my '52.

Haha, second time I've quoted you in 5 minutes, but whatever...

I've been wanting a tele with a humbucker in the neck position.

Some day I just want to get a brand new tele, put a humbucker in the bridge and add a strat pickup in the middle. Maybe even a bigsby for good measure :).

Tele's are known for single coil sounds but I am the proud owner of two Jim Root Teles that have EMG's in them. These are not your typical Tele's, nor were they meant to be. The body of the Tele is super comfortable to play, standing or sitting. Mine has the contoured body where a lot of the older ones do not. I happen to like my Tele with humbuckers. The twang might not be the same but the heaviness is more than I need with this set up. One thing, I had a 72 thinline classic reissue and the ONLY pickups that would fit without cutting the body were Fender pickups. Yuk. I tried putting some Seymour Duncans in and no way would they fit.
