I'm trying to start a campaign to have Fender produce an Andy Summers Signature Telecaster. The Fender Custom Shop model is too expensive and too small a quantity. A regular signature model guitar would cost about as much as any of other signature model guitar and I believe there is a market. Please write me and let me know what your thoughts and ideas. Help me campaign for this guitar.

I think andy summers is as deserving as anyone to get a signature model, but i think the artist line is big enough and im not sure it would be financially viable for fender to introduce more models what with the economy and all.
So I won't vote.

I liked your answer. It was honest. There are lot of msignature models. Some seem to be around for reason I can't phathom. On the other hand I've been suprised. I never knew what the big deal with the Robert Cray Strat was; until I played it. It was a really nice guitar. I've seen Rober Cray play. Infact he took the time before a show to sign one of my Strats. He's a great player and a nice guy.

Thanks for your answer.

I think that Squier should make the Andy Summers model. I have the Classic Vibe Tele 50's and the Classic Vibe Tele 60's and the build quality is flat amazing. The 60's sunburst with the white binding sells for $359.00 and is the best Squier I have ever played. To top it off, the guitar was completely set up at the factory and it was perfect, nothing needed to be done at all... I hardly ever run into this level of quality when buying a guitar.

I love Andy Summers so I'm all for it...might be tough to keep the price down though. More importantly, I noticed that you are in Iraq...please be safe brother.

Fender's custom shop already duplicated Andy Summer's guitar. He played the signature custom shop model at the Grammys with the Police on their reunion performance. There is a video with him talking about the guitar and the process of duplicating it.

I saw the Custom Shop model. I was very impressed.
Back in 1994 I contacted Fender and asked, “Why there wasn’t an Andy Summers signature model?” Andy had not contacted them and they had not contact him was pretty much the answer. I’m hoping this campaign will start something. Never costs to ask.
I ended up having my own my own Andy Summers "like" Telecaster built through a Luther I’m friends with. It turned out nice, but it’s not the same. There are no toggle switches and only 1 tone and 1 volume knob.
50’s style maple neck
Bound sunburst body
Hum bucker in the neck (coil tapped for a five way switch)
Tele bridge pickup
Mid-range scoop tone pot (I should have gone with the Fender mid-range boots circuit).
Vintage Style tuners
six saddle Brass bridge Tele bridge
Pick up positions
1. Jazz style Hum bucker
2. Single Coil neck
3. Hum bucker and bridge pick up
4. Single Coil neck and bridge pick up
5. Bridge pick up
I’d like to make a few changes: replace the jazz Hum bucker w/ a standard ’59 Hum bucker, change out the mid-range scoop. It’s nice, but it’s not the same as the Clapton tone pot I have in my EC Strat. I also want bigger frets and a flatter radius on the neck.
The whole deal; parts and labor to build this guitar ran me $1,000. I believe that Fender could keep the price right around where all the other Signature models are.
It’s a very versatile and great sounding guitar. Over all I’m very happy with the guitar and I’m glad that I had it made.

I vote yes!

Just cos "why not?" If they already have the CS model...

But they would have to make many adaptations, as per example, the bridge can't be easily duplicated, as well as the finish.

It would be more about keeping the same electronic system as the Custom Shop version, what seems to be the "soul" of the model.

I say no. Just produce a 'Police' model with the electronics and a regular 6 saddle bridge. I'm for the common approach for less $$. It does seem to be a unique instrument because of the electronics. A couple of unique colors (include sunburst and binding)and no relicing, should keep the price lower.

I'm all for Fender doing this. Due to the preamp, it would certainly be an interesting guitar, and unlike any other Telecaster currently being produced. If it were a production model, I'd definitely be interested.

I'd agree with the previous poster, though, about not relicing it (I'm not a fan of the whole relic craze, personally).

I liked a lot of the ideas that everone has thrown my way. Purhaps the trick is to get away from the lisencing.

I think that Fender could make this guitar using most of what Fender has in stock:
60’s style Fender Tele Neck w/ vintage tuners
SD Hum bucker neck PU
60’ Tele bridge PU
Regular Tele Custom Bound Alder Body
EC Mid-range boost circuit (instead of the pre-amp)
Brass six saddle bridge (Chromed if necessary)
It would be very cool to make them in different colors, too.
Metallic Ice Blue, Candy Apple Red, Black and of course 3-color Sun Burst
They wouldn't be reliced in anyway.

I could see the add now. It would be a new Telecaster Model. Fender could place photos of "The Police" in the background. They wouldn't even have to name the band, but they would definately be sending a message.

Thanks for everyone's ideas!

I would vote nitro as well so people could relic it if desired.

If they have to do one, Andy is definately deserving. I personally don't care for them though. Build your own "custom" and play your own sound. There is too much mimicry today.
