I am in the process of purchasing a new telecaster and I've never had the chance to play an ash bodied one. So, my question is what is supposed to be the difference between the two? Is there a difference in sound or is it more of a style preference such as the weight of the guitar? Thanks for any input.

The type of wood used for the body of an electric guitar does make a difference in the tones produced. I've found that Ash Teles tend to be a bit heavier than others, but I still prefer them for a couple of reasons.

1) The wood grain of ash lends itself to transparent colors like two tone/blonde/butterscotch, which are my current personal favorites.

2) Ash bodies (at least to my ears) tend to have more mid range qualities, which is what I'm after tone-wise.

my experience with ash is that it is lighter than alder and more resonant.

of course if you are buying a modern guitar, they coat those things in so much urethane, it doesn't matter what wood you use, they'll all sound the same.

I have a Korean lite ash and various alder bodies. I tend to like the lite ash, which I have upgraded with SCN Pickups and S-1 switch and that baby holds tone and sustain. It's not as heavy and is a good solid guitar. the others are also pretty good, but not like the lite ash.

I like Ash more.

I'm making a guitar body right now out of an African wood called Padouk.
Check it out.

the only real differences is that it has a slightly different grain to it which gives the guitar a different visual appearance with certain finishes on the guitar. The different type of wood also exhibits some different tonal qualities than other woods such as basswood and alder (but IMO they are barely noticeable)
