I figured if there's one place that might be able to answer this question, it would be this board.

I came across a guitar that's being presented as a new old stock 2006 Fender American Deluxe Telecaster with the QMT finish, similar to the one in this thread posted by ajaytele. The only problem is it has flatwound strings (kind of poorly strung, too), no S-1 system, chrome knobs instead of flat black, and chrome pickup covers that don't really fit.

I can understand having a used guitar get mixed up as a new one, with some aftermarket mods I guess. But, then I thought that all of the 2006 American Deluxes came with the S-1, and it seems strange that the S-1 system would have been removed. Is there another model of Tele that this might be that I'm not aware of?

The guitar sounds great, and plays very well. It also looks really nice, just some handling marks from being on the wall for a long time, nothing excessive but not pristine.

I guess the bottom line is it sounds good and plays great, but I am leery of it being presented as a new guitar when it appears used. It is a decent price but if it's used I think I should ask for an even better deal.

Any thoughts?

The shop manager was pretty unhappy when I pointed out the pickup covers and how poorly they were installed. They just received this guitar from another shop and she hadn't noticed the pickup covers.

It's going to the local authorized Fender tech for more questions but so far no more answers other than maybe it was a special run that called for no S-1 system.

You're right to be leery. Any shop that specializes in guitars should not under any circumstances indiscriminately display instruments without first examining them. Furthermore, Fenders are not entirely obscure; it strikes me a strange that someone could make a mistake or oversight of that magnitude. I could understand if it was a Mosrite perhaps, or a Burns. But a Fender? This shop sounds as if it has some explaining to do. Or you could try and coerce them into lowering the price. The problem with a modified instrument is twofold, however: why was it modified, and was it done correctly? Aftermarket parts can be used to disguise deficiencies or outright fraud.

Spot on. This is what I am concerned about. I already got them to bring the price down considerably, but price isn't everything if this guitar has been messed with previously.

I hope to get more info today from them after the tech gets back to them. I think with an S-1 switch this would be a great guitar.

It could be that the pickups were changed and the S-1 switch was removed at the same time. It seems like I recall a few folks had issues with the S-1 switches back when they first came out (say 2003-2005 time frame) and dumped them for regular volume pots (at least on Strats). It could be that this happened.

You're right - the best course of action is to have a tech check it over carefully.

Thanks, I didn't know that about the early switches.

The tech checked it out and said it was stock except for the pickup covers. Since the shop received it from another "sister" store's inventory, they don't know who installed it or why. But, the tech gave it a clean bill of health, which means I will have a new old stock warrantied guitar.

I still don't get why it doesn't have the S-1 but maybe I will consider it for an upgrade in the future.

Now, I just need to find a 60th anniversary case...

Jeff at Fender just answered it for me - it isn't an American Deluxe, but instead it is an American FSR run, model 017-0071-752. It looks like MF sold a few a couple years ago and MF advertised them as a Deluxe, not a FSR, and a few people got upset it seems. I can understand why.

This is a great guitar, and while the price I got it at is a great deal for an American Deluxe, I have to figure out if it was a good enough deal as an FSR to keep it.
