Hey, my HW1 tele came with steel bridge saddles, I've seen some of the vintage teles with brass saddles, while other people have changed their steel saddles to brass, any major sound/tone/sustain changes?

makes a diff

I think the tele thing is a thing

Its obvious that the intonaiton is better with 6 saddles!

what he said... you can get more control over the intonation of individual strings with a bridge where you can adjust each string's intonation individually rather than 2 at a time

Yeah, I know that some teles, like the american standard, have 6 individual adjustable saddles, but other teles, like the HW1 and RI teles have just three adjusable saddles, with some of the saddles being steel (HW1) while others (RIs and modified HW1's) use brass. I still don't know what the difference is.....

The original 3 saddle brass bridge apparently gives you better coupling which is a big part of the tele tone. Some people prefer the 6 saddle 'modern' bridge which in theory gives better intonation, yet would lose some coupling. There is also a company called vintique that makes angled 3 saddle tele bridges which fix the intonation problems while keeping the better coupling 3 saddles. All this coupling and intonation is (for me) minimal at best.

I like the 3 saddle brass bridge, but since Fender gives you the modern one too I could always replace it.

3 saddles vs. 6 saddles, brass vs. steel there's a lot of different opinions out there. From my limited experience I have found (prefer) vintage style bridges with three brass saddles. I upgraded my MIM tele from the modern bridge to the vintage with brass saddles and have found a noticeable improvement tone-wise over the standard 6 saddle bridge. Keep in mind there are a lot of variables in the "tone" equation: body wood, pickups, bridge, saddles, etc. I guess the thing is find out which variables fit for you and your guitar and take it from there!

Interesting take on the tone differences and preferences. The shop where I bought my HW1 is a Fender Custom shop and was quite adament their ability to set the intonation correctly, so I don't feel I'm missing anything there. I think for now, and after reading a few other takes on mods, I'll enjoy playing it without any mods....thanks

Definitely cool looking, you really think the individual bridges help to keep the guitar in tune?

First, I once had a 6-saddle bridge installed on one of my teles that originally had 3 brass saddles. I changed it back to the brass saddles. They look better, and for the stuff I play, they definitely sound better.
Second, I tried stainless steel double barrel saddles on another tele for some weeks. I also changed it back. Brass sounds warmer, yet still has lots of highs. The stainless steel saddles sounded too sharp and too cold. If that's what you're lookin' for, go for it. But beware: there's different diameter saddles on the market.
Third, the compensated saddles are really nice! I have those on one of my teles, and they both work and sound great!

I found a Wilkinson bridge at Stew-Mac that has 3 brass saddles that can pivot for intonation. It is great. Benefits of the 6 string saddle with the sound of the 3 saddle brass.

I have brass saddles on my lite ash tele and I like them better than any other saddles I have had on my other teles. Some people are of the opinion that individual saddles for each string are best on a tele for intonation.

Will the vintage 3-saddle, ashtray bridges install the same as the modern 6-saddle bridge on an Amer Std?
I need to replace at least one saddle, and would love to go to a brass 3 saddle ashtray style bridge, but unsure if it's a direct replacement!
