But I do find it curious.
Do all 5 positions have a distinct tone?

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Are you sure it's stock and hasn't been modded?

I've heard of a 90's MIM Tele model with humbucker in the neck (the name escapes at the moment) but I think it had a 4 way switch, not 5 way. Can you post some pics?

Try emailing the serial number to Fender customer service, they are pretty good about finding information for you that way.

Yeah, there was a mid-'90s MIM Fat Tele, but that wasn't the official name - It was called something like a Telecaster Special. I'll have to check my old Frontline catalogs at home this weekend to be sure.

I remember a picture of one in a Frontline with a guy lying on a couch playing a red one with a black pickguard. Neck humbucker was a full size chrome one like a Gibson.

Five way switch probably went like this (not necessarily in this order):

1. Bridge
2. Bridge and neck (coil tapped - just one coil of the humbucker)
3. Bridge and neck
4. Neck (coil tapped)
5. Neck

I want to say these Teles also had a vintage style 6-saddle bridge - the same bridge that's currently on the MIM Nashville Tele (not the Nashville Power Tele with the Fishman Power Bridge).

It's the guitar you're mentioning about? Perhaps you mean the California Fat Telecaster of 1997.

Here are some photos of California Fat Teles in various finishes. These guitars are not mine.
