All the talk on these old Fender amps is great fodder, but I distinctly remember using a '65 Pro Reverb in the early '70's and while the sound was big it was an old (at the time) tube amp that needed attention. I think everyone is spot on with their analysis, but someone starting out should understand that buying a blackface Twin (or Super or Pro) means big bucks on the purchase side, and significant repair dollars to get the sound. The Hot Rod series is awful close in sound and is a good bang for your tube buck. Better value than the RI stuff.

Just my 2 cents...

Either a Fender Super Reverb, or a Pro Tube Twin.

Nuther vote for the venerable Twin Reverb.
I can prolly count on one hand the number of country bands I've seen that don't use a Twin Reverb.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

If you want to go the Solid State route , which are lighter in weight, then might I suggest looking around for a used Fender Princeton 65 or Frontman 65R combo ? They're both rated at 65 watts and are more than loud enough to be used for playing with a band situation and are light, weighing in at around 35 lbs each. You could probably find them on either E-Bay or www.GuitarCenter.com on their used gear section under amps. Just type in Fender at the top of the page and click on amps.

It handles pedal steelers pretty good too.

I've got the Frontman 65 - it got it on clearance, and it was a good step up from the squire combo that came with my squire strat all those years ago, but now that I've got an old Bassman I'd never go back to solid state. If I had the bucks, and played often enough I'd get a 65 deluxe or twin RI.

You can also go with a USA made , Peavey Bandit. I have a 1989 Series 112 model which is rated at 80 watts and the clean on it, is one of the best I've ever heard on any amp in my 40 years of playing guitar. Also, a Fender Stage 185 will do ya as well, which I also own.

Wow! Well I hope this is good advice for you and your daughter . . . because I walked away with great advice here myself! Thanks for posting and thanks to all who contributed with sound advice. Next year - I will be in the market for a tube amp myself! Gosh I love this Fender Forum! Great folks indeed!

For me, Twin Reverb, Deluxe Reverb heck even a Deluxe VM can do a nice job. I play primarily Teles so nothing but love for the Tele/Fender tube amp combination!!
ABS :D
