Is it something that I could do myself with no problem? Or should I go to my local music shop and have them installed so I don't screw anything up?

Do by yourself

it'easy to do. Do you see some videos on You Tube ?

The most difficult thing is to learn soldering.

And it's not realy difficult, but you have to practice on a scrap parts and buy a good soldering iron ( Weller).

Not sodering gun : never

You should know that is very useful to know how to solder. You can repair your guitar/amp wire etc

This DVD will teach you everything you need to know about soldering, including how to wire a standard Telecaster setup.

I have no affiliation with the seller. I'm just a satisfied customer.

Get a soldering iron that gets hot... I use this one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Weller-120-Volt-Uni ... 20b05bce4e

It works very well...
It will make your life so much easier with a gun that melts the solder fast and efficiently... If you buy a cheap one, plan on being frustrated...
Tips:
1) If your eyesight is less than optimal, be sure you have good eyewear for closeup viewing..
2) I like to use the smallest gauge solder that they sell in Ace Hardware... It melts really fast...
3) Don't be afraid to splice wires, I do it all the time with no problems. If you do splice, buy some of that heat shrink stuff to insulate and secure your splicings.
4) Keep a small clamp/vise around. I use these all the time to make sure the metal connections are tight before soldering.. You need to have your metal to metal connections tight before soldering..
5) DO NOT over solder. once you have a good solid connection, you are finished with that connection. Even if it is a little bit of solder.
6) Take lots of photos before you start work. That will help to determine what it looked like before you started messing with it.

That is all I can think of now.
