I am currently wrapping up a 60's strat inspired ash strat build and I'm looking at a tele project. I have a Squier Standard Series Tele from the mid 90's that is routed and has a HB in the neck. The bridge is a really nice rock style single coil pu. I am thinking of 3 options for this guitar...

1) Keith Richards inspired tele. Removing the low E sting and keeping her in an open tuning for slide/stones/other stuff. Basically a new pick guard req.

2) Repainting something trippy and installing a more classic 50's neck pickup and turning it into a 50's style tele inspired by Jimmy Pages' dragon telecaster. Paint and pu req.

3) Getting rid of the neck pickup all together and redoing the wiring for the bridge pu to create an Esquire. Some wiring and a pickguard req.

My current family includes the ash strat with custom shop 69 pu's, another strat inspired by David Gilmour with EMG SA active pu's, and a Les Paul style guitar wired with 4 push/pull pots like the Jimmy Page Les Paul that Gibson charges 15K for(mine came in slightly less).

Thoughts? Opinions? Bitches and moans?

I love stuff like this and wish you luck.

Why do you need a new pickguard if you already have a humbucker in the neck? That, along with the "really nice rock style single coil" pickup in the bridge sounds like a winner to make a 5-string, open G tuned Keef-style Tele.

Just my opinion here, but repainting guitars (especially with something like the artwork on Page's Tele) usually leads to regret later. You can still play Jimmy Page licks on a Tele all day long without a wild paint job. Skip this step and save yourself the time and money it would take and thank yourself a few years from now. Again, just my opinion; I'm not trying to criticize your taste.

I'd encourage anyone who hasn't tried an Esquire to do so. I did and it's not my thing, sonically, but I love the way they look and if I didn't love the Tele neck pickup sound so much I could see having an Esquire in the stable. I suggest buying a new control plate, pots, switch, and caps/resistors if you do this and wiring a separate Esquire control panel. This can be your permanent Esquire setup which you can move from guitar to guitar and you won't lose your current setup - just de-solder yours and save it.

Here's my Esquire setup, with the .0047 "quack mod" cap in place of the stock cap & resistors of an Esquire with the "preset bassy tone" in the forward position - just so you can see what I'm talking about. This is ready to drop into a guitar and that's my point.

Whatever you decide, I know it will be fun. Post a pic or two when you're done so we can admire your work.

i say go for the Esquire. like the person before me I dig the neck pup a lot more than anything else, but I have played a few of the MIM Esquires and they are super cool.
