Hey, I have been playing guitar for a while but have basically no idea what is going on under that pick guard (my best guess is powerful black magic?). I just got my first american standard telecaster and while i want to totally make out with my neck pick up i am less than thrilled with the single coil in the bridge and, in terms of sound, I have my heart set on a red-red lace sensor but I was wondering what needed to happen to put that humbucker in the bridge? is it just a matter of getting the humbucker bridge plate? or would some wood shaving away have to happen?

Welcome.

I could be wrong but to the best of my knowledge, there is no direct, retrofitting bridge plate for an American Standard Tele with a full sized humbucker orientation. Even premising that there is, you'd definitely have to have some wood routed away to accommodate the humbucker. Your best bet is to get some sort of stacked humbucker which fits into your existing hardware. This way, any mod would be totally reversible where there would be no cutting, routing, etc. and if you ever wanted to sell your Tele, you could even restore the OEM pickup and best of all, no devaluation has been done to the guitar.

thanks!
man that sounds like an ordeal. About how much would getting the guitar routed cost in labor? Is there a holy grail of stacked humbuckers?

The magic number in my area is around $35 for the routing.

In terms of the "holy grail" of stacked humbuckers, you will have MANY valid responses. Meaning, many different brands fulfill the requirements of many different players. In your particular situation, you like the Lace Red/Red combo. This translates to you requiring a very powerful, very midrange heavy pickup. Whenever I hear these requirements, I always think DiMarzio as SO many of his pickups are very powerful and very midrange heavy.

Well you sound like me 30 years ago except I still dont know what is really going on underneath the pick guard today.lol Well when it comes to that you just talked to probably the most knowledgeable guy on the forum- Martian, and of course he told you the right way to go. Try a Dimarzio Fast Track-2 for your Bridge. If you like the crunch of classic rock like AC/DC to Zep those are the pups.
