Hey guys,

my friend Jake wants me to ground his 72 Tele Custom as it buzzes unless you are touching any metal on the guitar.

I stupidly said I would do it for him because he lends me his guitar all the time to have as back-up for mine plus I want to learn more about the 'innards' of these beasts.

Could any of you guys kindly talk me through it? Is there any way I could just open mine up and be able to see whats at fault with his compared to mine?

Greatly appreciated,

CC

Actually, buzzing unless touching metal on most guitars is normal. His may be more prominent because of the single coil. If the buzzing is excessive, well that's another story. Any extraneous shielding will offer no relief as the HB is fully shielded already and the bridge pickup is shielded to the most practical extent by the bridge plate.

The innards are simple enough but I honestly don't think you're going to find anything wrong with it. Notwithstanding, what guitar do you have that you intend on comparing it with?

Mt own 72 Tele Custom RI is what I'd be comparing it too. Same guitars apart from colour and fingerboard. I know nothing of this sort of thing but his 72 is way buzzier than mine.

Thanks Martian.

You're welcome. Let's begin, shall we?

Open up both guitars and simply compare the overall electronics of his guitar to your's in terms of wiring; verify all is identical.

Focus in on all components and their connections. Verify all are intact, that the wiring is firm and not hanging by a thread anywhere nor that any terminal or wire is impinging on any other.

Verify there is no corrosion or oxidization build up on the toggle, in or around the pots and the output jack. If there is, give them a liberal squirt with an outright petroleum free potentiometer spray cleaner, wipe off all the scuzz afterwards and hit them all again with the cleaner. Even if there isn't any foreign matter, give them a liberal squirt any way. Important: Make sure you get a goodly amount of cleaner down each pot's throat and rotate each pot from '0' to '10' at least twenty times each. After this, squirt the throats again. Wipe away all excess cleaner that is still on any external surface. This pot rejuvenation is very important as static buildup in pots do not always manifest as scratchiness. Rather, and here's the crux of it all, static buildup can manifest in an elevated hum level throughout a circuit.

Plug it in and test your results.

I shall presume that if you find any deviation, you've either corrected it or will ask for help.

Martian I truly appreciate, as always, your time taken in helping me out!

I don't have the guitars with me at the moment but I will tomorrow and I'll get back to you.

Thanks, big time!

Hey Martian, all pots cleaned and there were some decidedly dodgy solder connections going on, very messy in there. Re-connected just about everything, did what you said with the pots and its now no more buzzier than it should be. The single coil even sounds fuller for some reason! :)

Thanks again, you're a good man and I appreciate you time as does Jake!

Cheers!
