Up until now, I used (and liked) Live Wire Road Hog cables from Guitar Center because they work, they are inexpensive, they are 18.5' in length and they are very supple (they lay flat and don't kink up, like a garden hose, when you wrap them up). The only problem is that they only come as a straight/straight cable.

Since I only have Tele's now, I'm looking for some right-angle/straight instrument cables, where the right-angle end will properly fit into a stock Standard or USA Tele jack and where the cable is nice and supple.

Fender makes a Tone-Master™ Instrument Cable, 18', Straight-Right Configuration (Model: 0990118106). Will this cable work with a Tele? Is it a good quality, supple cable? Which cables are you guys using?

Thanks.

I read on another forum that Planet Waves makes a right-angle cable that will fit into a Tele jack - don't know if that's true but you might check it out.

I've been using the same several Whirlwind cables since the '90s. Most have been used so much the chrome is worn off the tips, exposing the brass (I assume) underneath but I've never had a Whirlwind cable go bad or get "scratchy" on me. They coil nicely too and don't kink up.

I needed some short cables for home use about two weeks ago and was stunned by prices at Guitar Center. $14 for a five foot cable? And that was a cheap one, not a Monster or other "boutique" cable. I live near a Best Buy that sells guitars, amps, drums, etc. (not all Best Buys do; check their website to find one) and found Hosa 10 foot straight/right angle cables for $10 each.

Do you know if they stock anything longer than 10'?

Hosa specifically? No, I didn't notice. I just grabbed what I needed and didn't really study what else they had for cables, other than a white Fender coily cord that caught my eye. They had a decent selection though - I'm sure they probably had some 20 or 25 foot cables suitable for stage use.

I have three Teles, a 08 Squier Tele Custom an early Bullet "1" HSS Tele and a NYPro in addition to my Jagmaster, Fender Lead II, Lead III, Squier II Stratocaster and Fender/DeArmond M-65 and I use the Fender Tonemaster cables and the current Standard Koil Kord 18 foot in white and love both styles. The Koil Kords was delivered last week so far it's fine. When using the Tonemaster with right angle end in the guitars jack loop the cable up and through the strap button/strap at the base of the guitar. You may have to enter from the front as opposed to the back determining whether you are comfortable with where the excess hangs.

The main concern of the Tonemaster is PROPER use and storage. Do NOT coil any tighter than what is present upon purchase when in its' cardboard packaging. That means NO "figure 8's" or tangled knots of additional cables. NO pulling on the cord/insulated cable when disconnecting from either guitar, amp or pedals, grab the "male" plug and pull out straight. No accidental/inadvertant "jerks" causing the cable to recoil as tension increases when moving around if changing position (see below/longer cable).

I have used four Tonemaster cables in various lengths from twelve to eighteen feet for the last year and a half and not a crackle or pop has emanated from my amps.

One MUST is to buy the longest cable possible. I learned early on even when practicing in the bedroom (I'm 46 yrs old) that a longer cable makes playing easier, no need to move amps etc..

I did try two higher priced "premium" lifetime guarantee cables, one, a Monster was returned the next day as once I arrived home and opened the package I discovered the "male" end was disfigured thus preventing "lock" when inserted into ANY of my five guitars jacks or three amps. Upon returning to the store others of that length examined by the staff as well were discovered to have the same defect AFTER struggling to open the packages encased in hard, sharp, vacuum formed plastic. The other a Planet Waves was brought back within in a week as I realized it wasn't the pots of the guitar causing the pops and scratchy noises but that "premium" cable. I also wasted two hours traveling time for each roundtrip visit to the nearest Guitar Center. Sometimes the most expensive is not the best choice.

Where "tone" is concerned sure cable composition, length and engineering are factors BUT what influences tone more is your amp, guitar, pickups, strings, effects pedals and even pick choice.

I have a blk fender koil kord which I like. I also have a wide selection of cheap to premium cords. I prefer cables with switchcraft jacks, haven't had any problems with them. :)

Great stuff here. Thanks, JerseyJetFan.

Your welcome, anything to save you a few bucks and headaches.

One item I neglected to mention is the appearance of a new recessed input jack designed for Telecaster guitars. I've added a link below so you can see the difference between it and the stock jack most all Teles are equipped with. I haven't decided whether to try it in one of my guitars. Maybe someone else here has and can post their experience.

Also when I mentioned the Monster cable in the previous post, the problem was that BOTH male ends were too short to lock into any of the input jacks of my six guitars. I found that frustrating since they were cut short and not mis-shapen it wasn't caught by "quality control" but then again I don't recall where they were made. It was hard enough to part with the cash as they, Monster and Planet Waves are considerably more expensive then the Fender Tonemaster cables. I bought them because Guitar Center does NOT stock the Fender Tonemaster cables in their retail stores. I've since taken to buying mine over the internet/mail order/phone. Do a "google" search and look for the best prices.

That kind of jack mount has been around for a while. I prefer Electrosocket jack mounts because the threads work with Switchcraft jacks. I've read that some folks have bought copies of this product from other sources that have the hole or the threads (or both) that only work with "import" jacks - something about metric sizing or something. Don't know if that's true, but I know that the jack and the switch linked below are top quality items and are "lifetime" replacements. Install them once and you'll never have to worry about your jack loosening up like the stock Fender ones do.

I think I'll buy a Fender Tone-Master cable and try it out. There's a guy on Ebay selling them for $14.99 each. If I like them, I'll buy a few more.

Thanks for the tip.

Why not sacrifice one of those cables you love so much and install a right angle jack on it? If you no longer have need of them because they have straight ends where is the loss?

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Hmmm. Now THAT'S a thought. What and where would I get such a thing?

Where the replacement right angled jack is concerned there are some listed on Ebay at this time. There was another style but here is one I found currently active, I've added the link below.
