Hey all,

If you haven't seen it already, guitar fetish sells unfinished telecaster bodies made of ash for $60. They're currently on back order, so I assume they must be popular...

Has anyone ordered one? How was the neck pocket fit? How was the quality overall? They look to be quite a few pieces... 5 maybe? Are they pretty accurate shape and size wise? I can't imagine it can be THAT hard to copy a telecaster of all guitars.

Anyway, I was thinking about using one for a tele project. I guess I'll end up going a solid color, due to the body pieces. If anyone knows where I can get a quality 1 piece or 2 piece for a reasonable price, let me know.

Here's what I'm talking about: http://store.guitarfetish.com/untestbosoas.html

Thanks

I'm sure you've seen these, but for anyone else who is interested, they sell finished bodies too:

If they had them in Sherwood Green, I'd have one already. I'm thinking about a Capri Orange body with a MIM '60s Classic neck from eBay for my next Tele project but I'm in no rush.

I think that's a smart move. As cheap as these are, I can't imagine that grain matching is a consideration for the manufacturer. Fender does pretty well matching grain on bodies - you get what you pay for.

I'd like to know too. At that price, I just might find out one of these days.

Send an email to Jay Abend, the owner. He's a straight shooter and a DIY type of guy and will answer your questions fairly quickly if he is around and not overseas.

Thanks guys,

I have seen their finished bodies also, but I'm pretty skeptical about their finish materials, the quality of the finish, plus, I was looking to do my own nitro finish, so that's why the unfinished ash body was appealing to me. I wonder how important the grain matching would be on colors like (white) blonde and butterscotch blonde. Maybe it's just me, but it seems quite hard to see the grain in the finish, or to tell if its matching. Maybe it's just that fender is throwing on thick and cloudy finishes these days or something. I'm starting to get a craving for daphne blue body with a tortoise pickguard and rosewood neck... I'll have to see.

Did the GF ash Tele body will have Stratty comfort contours (tummy cut) on the rear side?

I am currently building a strat from guitar fetish stuff excludind pickups. All I can say so far is that I have a mixed review. The body/neck needed some evening out to fit ok. I have also had a screw head break off while putting a tuner on and a screw head snap off while doing a string tree. The heads on these screws tend to strip easliy as well. In terms of body finish, it is nice. I have the dark ash body and the grain doesn't match but it is very atractive. Just keep inmind it will not be perfect, but perfection is slot to ask for less $$$.

No, pretty sure it doesn't have the tummy cut, based on the pics. Also wouldn't be too hard to add for most people wanting to tackle that kind of project.

I have no idea but I love a natural finish on an Ash Tele. Five pieces, you would definitely have to go with a solid color.

A natural ash Telecaster looks better with a 3-ply parchment pickguard, a maple neck and a chrome-covered humbucker in the front position coupled with a super 5-way switch for a killer range of tones ranging from Buck Owens-style country to Albert Collins-style blues.

This guitar is not mine, although I like it a lot.

Here is the tele I just completed using the guitar fetish ash body. Overall I am pleased with guitar fetish. The only mod I HAD to make was the string holes were off just slightly, so I just drilled them a little larger. The mods I wanted to make were routing the neck pocket for a humbucker, cutting a forearm contour, and cutting the tummy contour. The body is a three piece and they could have done a better job of centering the pieces but for this price I'm not going to complain. I will say this, GFS pickups never cease to amaze me for the price!!!! And as far as customer service guitar fetish is one of the best!!

Nice guitar! The transparent teal finish looks astounding over the grainy ash body.

Jason, I'm curious about the pickup switching on this GFS Telecaster. It's a standard 3-way or a super 5-way?

I like much the super 5-way because it allows the neck humbucker to be coil-tapped for a traditional Tele single-coil neck pickup sound.

It's a traditional three way. It never occurred to me to wire it like the five way super switch and coil tap the humbucker! I think a rewire is on order!!!! Thanks for the idea!

Which pickups you used on this guitar? Looks much a calibrated set of GFS pickups.

BTW, you told us that you plan to add Strat-style belly contours for the back. I suggest you to add some nice cream binding on the top.

The cream binding and the contoured back gives this guitar the overall appeal of a late 1990s-early 2000s transparent teal American Deluxe Tele, while the white shell pickguard adds an elegant touch of vintage vibe.

Here's a GFS Tele body, with GFS neck and most hardware.
The body finish is very nice. There were a few minor fit
problems when I assembled it, but over all I'm happy with it.

The cherry sunburst finish on this guitar is impressive, as well as the 4-ply white moto pickguard.

BTW, this GFS Tele resemble very much to a Fender Chambered Spruce (show below - not mine, of course).
