HI Forum,

Newbie here, so hello to all!

I want to buy a Tele but am confused with the myriad of models available, so wonder if some of you kind folks might offer me some advice?

Basically I want a traditional Tele, but would like whatever the up to date version is. If it was a Strat I guess it would be an American Standard. What is the Tele equivalent?

Thanks for any advice.

Hi, and welcome to the forums. Lots of good folks here!
There is something good about all of the Tele models. I have an American Deluxe, and find it to be the best for me. Check out a local shop, Guitar Center Etc. Look at your budget, and play as many models as they have. Im sure one will find you.

Bill

I have an American Standard (AmStd) 2006 that gives me a very credible vintage sound, but remember that the amp matters too. (Whole other topic.)

They're all a bit different though ... my 1998 US made (more or less the equivalent of an AmStd) is a bit more muted and mellow than the 06. A little bit less country and more jazzy sounding. So if you're willing to consider used, definitely a "must try" proposition.

Interestingly, the 2002 Highway 1 Tele is very mute and is the least "classic" sounding in my whole collection.

I also have a 72 and 69 Thinline RI and they have some interesting sounds, though not where to start if you're looking for the classic Tele Twang.

MIM are worth trying too (the "which is better MIM or US" has been beat to death here) and suffice it to say that you might like one of those and you'd save some money in the process.

Overall though, if you're in a position where you don't have time or any way to try, the AmStd will give you the classic Tele sound and then all the other Teles you get after will be icing on the cake.

But wait, there's more 8)

Check out the new 2010 American Tele Special. It has that nice vintage feel, 2 barrel bridge, Texas Specials, all for only $799. I bought one and love it. The only one I personally would replace it with is the '52RI

+1 (Although I'm not sure I'd do the 52RI swap myself. Would have to give the pickups a listen as I'm not sure I don't prefer the texas specials.. and think I prefer the jumbo frets too.. If that was the case then we'd get into "why bother" territory-- already got what I want.)

Roballan. Good point, well taken!

I have to make a correction to my posting. It comes with the vintage 3 barrel bridge, not two. My bad. :?

If you have the scratch go with an American Deluxe, just an amazing ax.
