Hi Guys/Gals
Just tried to date my '72 Telecaster Custom, but am finding it hard to find. The body is the same colour as the Vintage Hot Rod '52 Tele here: http://www.fender.com/products/search.p ... 0100232850
but it's got all the '72 features. I can't find one in this finish anywhere and I'm wondering why.

Any ideas?

Mark

Start by looking at the serial number.

Hi,

There are three numbers on the guitar.

The neck PAT no.3550496

The head PAT no. too small to read

And a number on the Plate on the body back with the fender 'F'... I guess this must be it? It's 716600

thanks

Serial number 716600 points to a year of 1976. Check this out: http://www.fender.com/support/usa_instruments.php
If you want a more specific date, then take the neck off and check the date stamp on the heel end. You got a "Telecaster Custom" by the way. The "72 Telecaster Custom" is just what Fender calls the modern reissues.

Sorry I can't help with your questions about the color of the guitar. I'm no expert on 70's Fender finishes. Maybe someone stripped and refinished the guitar over the years? Are you the original owner?

I tried dating a Telecaster once but she stood me up. Waited for hours in the restaurant. Even sent her a bunch of Ernie Ball Slinky's.

She never even called me.

I've narrowed it down a bit according to my info your Tele was made between Sept and Dec 76 as the 700,000 started in Sept. Also from Aug 76 to Apr 77 they put decals with a 76 prefix plus 5 numbers on the headstocks of some. They also used an S6 prefix strangely enough from Mar. 77 to Aug.78 according to The Fender Stratocaster Book by A. R. Duchossoir.

Thanks guys.

No, I don't think it was stripped and re finished, so it must have been bought like that. Any ideas of its worth?

Thanks
