Hello, Fender forum,

I recently purchased a lovely Fender Custom Shop 'Baja' Tele in Paris and was wondering whether I need to and if so, how to register the serial number of my guitar to benefit from the Fender warranty coverage: the guy in the shop told me that there was a 2-year shop warranty and a 5-year Fender warranty.

I have already searched through the Fender site and haven't found any reference to this - is the serial number only necessary when requesting repairs under warranty?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum and enjoy your new Fender. Look at the top of this page, and look under " Support " You`ll see a lind for Warranty and Customer Care. See if theres a link that may be of some help. I myself bought an extra warranty package where I bought my guitar. It cost me $50 for 2 years and they do set ups and string changes under that package and most other repairs providing I didn`t do anything to damage the guitar myself. Good Luck

I've already checked the site and read through the warranty disclaimers provided on .pdf by the website.

I am, however, awaiting reply from the Fender Customer Relations email-contact.

Interesting thread. I've never thought about it much, but have always assumed Fender guitars and basses had a lifetime warranty.

According to this website, they do with the following exceptions:

Quote:
The following items are not covered by this warranty.

1. Fret wear, saddle wear, nut wear, strings and batteries.

2. Setups, adjustments or routine maintenance of any kind.

3. Damage to finishes or cracks, splitting, or warpage of wood due to changes in temperature or humidity, exposure to or contact with sun, fire, moisture, body salts and acids of perspiration, guitar straps, guitar stands/hangers made from vinyl, plastic, rubber or other synthetic materials, any other chemicals or non-Fender-approved polishes.

4. Damage, corrosion or rusting of any hardware components caused by humidity, salty air, or exposure to the moisture, body salts and acids of perspiration.

5. Any damage to an instrument resulting from customization or modification.

6. Normal wear and tear on any part of the instrument, case or gig bag including jacks, controls, switches, plated surfaces, tuning machines, pickguards, zippers, clasps, handles, latches, case hardware etc.

7. All other damage and deterioration due to normal usage, wear and tear, aging, accidents, neglect, abuse, or Acts of Nature.

8. Any instrument, whose serial number is missing, altered or tampered with in any fashion.

9. Any instrument purchased from anyone other than an Authorized Fender® Dealer.

10. Instruments that have been serviced by unauthorized persons (any person other than a Fender Certified Technician at an Authorized Fender Service Center).

I don't want to throw rocks at Fender here - I love their products and understand the legal reasons for the limitations above, but I must humorously ask: What is covered under warranty?

George I know you are being diplomatic so let me say it for you. It is a joke and I think someone better rewrite that nonsense.

I received the "official" reply from Fender Customer Service. But really, reading what George posted as being the "warranty" coverage, it doesn't seem worthwhile bothering with the steps below.

Quote:
Hello,
Thanks for writing in. The owner's registration is merely a marketing
survey. We do not keep any of the information. If you ever need warranty
work, you will need to bring your instrument to an authorized service
center, along with a copy of the receipt. Attached is a copy of our
warranty document. We appreciate your patronage, and thanks again for
writing in.

Best Regards,

Interesting and a disappointment.

There was I naively thinking that by registering my cherished instrument with Fender that it would become part of a historical archive that tracked one of their proudly produced instruments as it winged its way around the globe. I imagined a modern database that would be part of the historical record of Fenders illustrious history and as a customer I was participating in something that was greater than the sum of its parts.

But no; it is merely a marketing tool that reduces me and my instrument simply to a statistic in a world of mass produced modern consumer goods.

Washing machines or guitars it is just business as usual eh?

Got that right bud. Really doesn't understand why they call it 'support' and but really nothing on their part to support for our guitars. Just saying. Oh well.

Old thread....and i missed it when originally posted....but ok....
Admittedly our serial number data isn't quite as romantic as Bottled was hoping it was, but its not merely a marketing tool either. Our warranties appear on all of our brand websites in the Support sections.
Quote:
IMPORTANT: PLEASE RETAIN YOUR ORIGINAL SALES RECEIPT, AS IT IS YOUR PROOF OF PURCHASE VALIDATING THIS LIMITED WARRANTY

Also, on Custom Shop Instruments, in the Custom Care area, if you register in that area---
Quote:
Upon registration, original purchasers will be given an extension of their warranty that provides worldwide limited lifetime coverage on the electronic and hardware components of their Custom Shop instruments.

Think about that for a minute. If you're the original owner, we'll cover the Pickups and hardware Limited Lifetime (rather than the usual year on those things). That ain't too shabby Imho.
Serial numbers: We DO have a database and we use it and use it and use it everyday.
Fender hasn't always been good about tracking serial numbers...and there ARE MANY MANY MANY serial numbers, and occasionally we can't track one...but for the most part, to 1994 we can track serials and their info, pretty well. In the Customer Service area, serial numbers are VERY important and literally DO track our

proudly produced instruments as it winged its way around the globe.

I still maintain that every guitar is different..mass production notwithstanding. If someone ends up feeling like a statistic...thats disappointing...because I've never really heard any marketing folks here (or anyone else, really) speak about stats when it comes to the people that play our instruments.

Let's face it, it IS a business and we DO have to make some money to keep doing what we do...and we DO have to use marketing to help us do it---at the same time I'm surrounded by what I call "True Believers" everyday here at work. I know what a True Believer looks like, because i think I'm one myself.

Ok, well pauldrake, whats not in the support area that should be there?
What kind of support do you expect for your guitars and what would you like to see?
I won't make any promises I can't keep....but i can promise to have a look and consider your expectations and/or what we are missing and what would improve the support. also just sayin.......

At any rate....back to work for me.
All the best,
rob

.......and........since I kinda flew through the earlier posts...(ooops sorry)...a very very delayed response to george and straycat113 ---what IS covered? Since that info is actually on the warranty.....the short answer is that we'll cover Factory Defects. Defects in manufacturing within the time covered. If you look at the stuff on the "Not covered" list....well to me it looks reasonable....
If you live near Phoenix and you leave your guitar in the car (currently 118 degrees), dooood......you're on yer own.
If you play in the shower, or like one of our old ads...play while surfing...you're on yer own..
If you figure you'd like to change out a pickup and take a drummel to the body.....
yep......on yer own. :O)

Anyway....hope yer all havin a nice evenin....or day (wherever ya are)

All the best,
rob

To Rob Schwarz.
You could update the Mexican serial number web page to include current years. It now stops at the year 2005-2006.
My Nashville Tele as a MX10+6digits serial number, is it a real Fender Tele?
If so, in what year was it built?

I'm not Rob and I'm not with Fender, but that is a Fender serial number. They started using the the MX10s about the middle of last year (June/July or so). I'm not sure if any have left the factory with MX11s yet, but if they haven't then it should change over pretty soon.

He would need your full serial number to check to get the actual date your Tele was completed; you can always email it to Fender's Consumer Relations (consumerrelations@fender.com) if you don't want to post the full serial number in the open forum.

Thanks John C!

denitronik, we do have someone working on getting the serial number data up to date on the site..to be honest though, its in addition to other duties so it is taking some time. Apologies for that. We want it up there asap as well.

What John C said is correct....but as time allows, I'll look up a serial number when i can.
Send me a PM and I'll see what i can find for you.

All the best,
rob

Thank you Rob Schwarz and John C for the information!

I did not have my guitar when I wrote the reply and I couldn"t remember the serial number except that it started with MX10.

The full serial number is MX10235466 so this would mean that it was built in 2010?

So, I recently bought a MIM standard tele with the following serial #:

MZ9509995

I was told it was made in 2010. Does the above serial # indicate it was made in 1995?

Any other details you can tell from the number above?
