I have a MIM 72 thinline with a "limited edition" sticker on the back of the headstock, does anyone know what would make it a "limited edition"? I can't find any info on it at all.

thanks all.

Usually they are FSR guitars. I think that stands for Factory Special Run, or maybe Fender Special Run.

A dealer will decide they want to have an "exclusive" product that other dealers don't carry, so they'll order 250 or 500 or whatever number of a guitar with special features - usually it's a different color or different parts.

One example is your FSR '72 Thinline in two-tone sunburst. That's a fairly recent purchase, right? I know that because I got the flyer from Guitar Center not too long ago advertising them in 2TSB as a "Guitar Center exclusive". I think they also had a special two-tone tolex Blues Junior amp at the same time.

Another example from a few months back was the FSR Western Telecaster. It had a MIM Standard Telecaster neck and 6-saddle bridge, a white blonde ash body from a MIM '50s Classic Telecaster, a black pickguard, and I think Texas Special pickups.

Another recent one I remember from Musician's Friend was a '72 Deluxe Telecaster reissue in white - everyone else had them in black and brown but if you wanted one in white you had to buy it from MF.

There was also the MIM '69 Thinlines from around 2002 that were available in '60s colors like Shell Pink, Candy Apple Red, Lake Placid Blue, etc.

The list is endless.

Lots of the Korean guitars are limited runs too, but they don't have the same stickers that yours does. Seems to me those stickers are just on the MIM guitars. But Fender offers lots of special models made in Korea that are around for a year or two and then they're gone. I'd bet they do one big production run and that's all. Some examples include the Koa Telecaster, the Lite Ash Telecaster, the FMT HH Telecaster, the Scorpion and Celtic Esquires from a few years ago, etc.

It's all just marketing though...both Fender and their dealers dream up new models or variations of old models so they can make money selling them.

Right, recent purchase. And I have noticed that the 2TSB seems to be only offered by GC/MF. So it looks like the dealer, for some reason has chosen the 2TSB to be a special edition. And it sounds like that is the only reason it is "special".

thanks.

Csapo that is the most colorful herd of guitars I gave seen. Looks like a box of Crayola crayons. Very nice.
