Hi all from Germany,

I bought a used Fender Telecaster specified as a Fender Custom Shop American Classic Tele. It is a beautiful guitar which I love and play often.

Now, a friend told me, that the serial # is given for Korean made guitars and I doubt and need help to identify my guitar.

The serial # is CN506782

You can see this guitar here http://gallery.me.com/joergengels#100110

Can anybody help me?

Thanks in advance and I apologize for my English.

Regards
Jörg

This is an early Custom Classic Telecaster with an American Tele bridge pickup and two Texas Special Strat single-coils.

The Custom Classic differed significantly from the earlier American Classics.
It had a classic Tele pickup in the bridge and a Twisted in the neck. It also sported a reversed control plate. This guitar is no longer produced.

Fender's Custom Shop actually offers the Custom Deluxe Telecaster as an alternative to the discontinued American and Custom Classic series:

I think the way it works is, a Fender serial number that begins with CN followed by 6 digits (CNxxxxxx) is a Korean made instrument. If the CN is followed by 5 digits (CNxxxxx), it is a USA made instrument, where the C means Collector Series, the N means the decade of the 1990's and the first number after the N is the year of manufacture (N5 = 1995).

I too have an authentic Fender American Classic Telecaster. (1995 thru 1999).
ALL MADE IN THE CUSTOM SHOP USA!
Yes it has 3 pickups (single coil, 2 white and 1 black) and the control plate is inverted.
It has a 5 way selector switch.
Mine is a 1998 model.
Gold hardware was an option (mine is gold).
Pearl White or Tortoiseshell 8 screw pick guard only!
The SN is CN507436 and it was made in the USA at the CUSTOM SHOP.
IT WAS NOT MADE IN KOREA, nor is yours.
CN plus 6 digits normally does relate to guitars made in Korea, EXCEPT FOR THOSE MADE IN THE CUSTOM SHOP IN THE USA!
My SN is not far from yours.
Your sn would suggest to me, it was made BEFORE mine.

ps. I live in USA. My wife is German with relatives in Hanau!

Fender Support has a site for dating guitars. I copied this from that site -
Sounds like you both have Korean guitars or someone swaped necks on you. I've noticed a lot of suspicious sellers on Ebay selling USA bodies with missing necks???? Then trying to sell the necks separately.

CN(XXXXXX)
VN(XXXXXX) Korean-made Fender/Squier guitars (dating unclear)

Your link does not work. We could spend all day debating the meaning of your serial number. We really need to see the photos of your guitar to help. Otherwise, it is all academic.

Unfortunately the Fender Support dating site has some errors and omissions. The most glaring of which is that they completely omit the Custom Shop's various serial number systems. As several people have said, "CN" can be USA Custom Shop or Korean.

Bluesky - this is a zombie thread from March 2010. I suspect the OP has long since had his question answered.
