As much as I hate the idea of scratching up a brand new guitar I love the look and the vibe{ I don't know what it means either but everyone says it } of vintage gear. The road worn Tele looks so authentic .
My brother came back from a trip raving about this vintage tele he saw in a shop , turned out to be a road worn .I reckon that is one guitar I would buy new .

the only thing that is going to matter about where the guitar is made is down the road if you decide tosell it the MIA will hold it's value a bit more. other than that buy the one that is right for you I have my second MIM tele and have played them for over ten years. Remember not any one guitar is alike so play even several of the same kind if you can before you decide.

Whether or not the guitar was MIM wouldn't matter to me as MIM Fenders are great guitars too.I don't like the reliced look of the Roadworn, that would be the turn-off for me.

You can get a MIM tele or a USA tele made in the USA by a Mexican. No offense to any one that's hispanic, love the people, the food and the tequilla. I just mean that the factories are literally within an hour of each other if I'm not mistaken. I have a made in Mexico tele that I put some locking Sperzels in and I never have a tuning problem. I also put a set of 54 Nocaster pups in it and I love it.

Plain and simple go with what made you happy and that seemed to be the Road Worn. I think if the RW said made in the US it would be in your house right now. I was the same way in the 80s with MIJ Fenders but the 3 I own now I would never get rid of.

Don't forget that one of the main reasons Fender "Relics" their instruments in the custom shop is because the heavy Finishes they put on their necks make them very "Sticky" during performance. Some years models have heavier finishes then others. That's why when you pick up a vintage fender with most of the lacquer removed on the neck, it feels so smooth to play.

I've got a 50th anniversary MIA Strat that I never play because the front and back of the neck feel so sticky after a bit of sweat.

There is a Huge play-ability factor with the relic job on the road worn instruments. Especially the maple necks.

Also the american standard pickups always sound too bright to me, Especially at higher volume. While the voicing in all of the road worn series guitars have removed the treble I usually dial down with my american fenders. The road worn pickups sound warmer without loosing clarity at higher volumes.

I've got the 72 Telecaster Deluxe Road Worn (limited run in 2010) and I play it more then any of my american fenders or dare I say my "G" word guitars as well.

I think fender did an amazing job producing the road worn series for players who are concerned with play-ability, tone and Cost. If you don't like the vintage vibe, you should probably be playing an ESP with skulls on it!

I respectfully disagree with the RW fretting out with a 7.25 radius neck. The RW has Dunlop 6105 tall frets and that eliminates the fret-out on this guitar. That is why they were used.

What I like about the RW that is not on the AM Std is nitro paint. I think it looks better and feels better. Also the neck has been sanded down to remove the finish, giving it a satin type feel. What you have to do with the RW or the AM Std is a setup. I have seen some RW guitars come with an awful setup, but that never stops me.. When I am done with them and the neck is straight, they sing like birds and stay in tune. You just have to work it.

I am also a fan of Tex-Mex pickups which the RW has and the AM Std does not.

Regards,

TJ

My Road Worn Blonde which I admittedly heavily modified is by far my favorite Fender guitar I own (out of about 10). I did some additional relicing, aged parts, and put in top shelf pickups and electronics and a black bakelite pickguard as well as a Barden 3 brass saddle setup.
