Anyone remember what kind of wood Fender was using for bodies on their MIM guitars in the mid-90's (94-96)? For some reason I want to say poplar, but I'm not sure.

Yep, poplar. Models with the Brown Sunburst finish had (and probably still have) a maple veneer on the front and back.

I'm pretty sure the Sunburst is Alder veneer not maple, and the poplar body, then around 2000 and to current, all alder bodies. That's STANDARD Telecasters, there are some ash like a FRS for example.

Could be. Back in '98 when I bought my first Sunburst Standard Tele, it was maple - or at least I remember it that way. I don't know if I read that in a Fender Frontline catalog, on the TDPRI or somewhere, but it sticks in my brain for some reason.

Yep, I agree.

Other trivia: The MIA Nashville B-Bender has a poplar body.

Good choice on the 10's. I love 'em as the upper strings give a little more BOOM and twang !

Fhopkins I think you will find the 9s better on your Tele. All my Strats are set with 10s but I feel more comfortable with 9s on a Tele especially if your into pedal steel bends where just your index finger is being used. If I had 10s on a Tele they would be to much for certain things.
