Hi, I have a mex. 69 Tele thinline and love it. I have been told that if I change the pickups in it I would greatly improve the sound. One recommendation was the Fender Custom Shop Texas Special Pickups. Would these make a difference or should I go with something else. I have also been told to be careful about choosing new pickups as all Tele pickups do not match up well with certain guitars. I would be grateful for any advice.

Welcome, Glynn.

First off if YOU are happy with the guitar, are YOU unhappy with the pickups or did others plant that idea of replacing pickups in your head? Apparently, it seems the latter as you've already been given confusing advise while at the same time, we haven't heard YOUR thoughts about what you DO like about your current pickups and what YOU feel is lacking.

Thank you for the reply Martian,

Although I am happy with the guitar, I have read on several forums and reviews that the overall sound and effects was greatly improved with the replacement of the stock pickups. As for the music I play, It is mostly rock, and some country. I plan on keeping my Tele for a long time and would like to have the best sound I can get out of it. Thanks again

You're quite welcome.

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Frankly, if you're satisfied with the pickups and from what I know to be true, your pickups are indeed, perfectly suited for your stylings, leave well enough alone until if, and that's a big 'if' it comes to the point where YOU feel something is lacking. Disregard what others may say up to this point as again, it's YOUR guitar.

Stick a set of Lindy Fralins or Rio Grandes. These pickups are perhaps among the best-sounding vintage-style boutique Telecaster pickups actually available in the market.

Seymour Duncan also makes high-quality vintage-sounding Telecaster pickups, the Antiquity II series.

Antiquity II: The '60s Twang Series

The ‘50s marked the birth of rock ‘n’ roll and Antiquity pickups capture the tone of the era. Each Antiquity pickup is hand-crafted in Santa Barbara from the same materials and the same production techniques as the originals. Seymour Duncan hand-winds each single coil pickup using a “scatter-wind” process that captures the original winding patterns in a way no machine can duplicate. The bobbins are carefully aged and impregnated with fine dust particles, the Alnico II magnets are ever-so-slightly demagnetized, and the wire and insulation are treated to duplicate the tempering of years of use. Of course, all of this is done in order to accurately replicate that
unmistakable vintage tone of the early pickups in a way that could never be done with a mass production process.

Antiquity II neck (rhythm) pickup for Telecaster

This neck pickup for Telecaster guitars is wound as a full-sounding rhythm pickup. It comes with an aged, deep drawn cover for vintage looks and added coil protection. The neck pickup comes with schematic and mounting screws. Each pickup re-creates the look and sound of an aged early '60s pickup. The pickup comes complete with screws, schematics and vintage "push back" cloth braid hookup wire.

DC Ohms: 7.6K
Inductance: 2.13 henries

Antiquity II bridge (lead) pickup for Telecaster

The beauty of an early '60s Tele lead pickup. Using vintage techniques, each pickup is hand-fabricated and scatter-wound. All parts of the pickup are aged and given the look of a pickup played for 40 years! Like the originals, the ferrous bottom plates are not wax-potted for that "breakin'-up" Tele twang tone that's just on the verge of feedback. The pickups are Dun-Aged™ and come with mounting hardware, schematics, and tons of tone! The hookup wire is the classic "push back" cloth braid wire.

DC Ohms: 6.4K
Inductance: 2.1 henries
