To be honest I always thought they were just cosmetic. And that is why they are called ashtray covers because guys did use them as ashtrays back in the day.

I suppose you could rest the heel of your hand on it and not mute the strings, but most players want the ability to touch the strings or not in any way they can. Sort of like the madly unpopular mute rubber bar on Jaguars.

I use mine sometimes, it forces me to not palm mute.

They provide good shielding. The bridge is grounded and the cover is metal.

Try playing with it on.

You will think more about your left hand as it is the only way to mute and stop notes.
It changes your attack and makes you think differently. It may show you some things to add to your style! :wink:
