I love my 52 but I am not a fan of the switching setup. Has anyone switched to a traditional 3 way switch (pos 1 bridge, pos 2 bridge/neck, pos 3 neck) The position 3 is too dark for my taste right now. I am worried that if i modify this switch on my 52 I will loose the great tone I get from the bridge and the neck.

When I had my 52 I did the modern wiring conversion. It is very easy to do (if I can do itso can you). The conversion is really worth it, the pickups come alive and the "dark" neck pickup tone is gone. Some people like that one, but it wasn't my favorite. With the wiring change the 52 just opens up, as it should.
In my case, I had too many guitars and it was one of the one's that I wasn't really attached to.

I vote for the change.

good luck.

Someday they will get smart and have a switch option that requires no compromises. By that I mean a 4-position switch that can provide the 3 vintage settings, plus the two-pickup combination.

I personally love the "dark" neck pickup sound and don't want to give it up. The world has simply not discovered it yet. First off it's a rhythm tone, not a lead tone. It's a great sound for just strumming some chords without having them be in your face.

I keep my '67 Tele wired stock and finagle the switch to get the two-pickup combination. This guitar stays at home so it's not that big a deal, but in a live situation it would be impractical.

I think there is no setting that allows both pickups to be selected. That is why i am thinking about modifying the switch

Well, you can get it by just carefully setting the switch in between the middle and bridge positions until you hear the sound. I do it all the time but it's a nuisance and you can't do it quickly enough in a performance situation. Plus it's too easy to knock it out of position.

When you said you are "thinking about modifying the switch", what did you have in mind?
