I'm looking to purchase my first Tele ever! Super psyched and incredibly indecisive. I was thinking of starting w/ a MIM Standard and upgrading (changing bridge, pups, etc), but I started reading that the Highway 1 is the American-made step up from the standard. Any thoughts or is this not even a comparison? Btw, I play in a band that is progressive rock and when we play shows, it's mayhem, so I need something to beat up as well. Any suggestions would be great thanks

I have a Hwy 1 and really like it a lot. As far as beating up the finish, if you play hard you`ll do that to any guitar no matter what the finish is. I have to agree with Nevin don`t do any upgrades, as he states the base models are pretty good.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I was leaning more towards the Highway 1 cuz of sound and it comes stock w/ more of what I wanted in a tele anyway. was trying to think of a cheaper alternative like a mutated mex standard. I'll remember you when I get famous  :D

I have both MIM and MIA teles...IMO you do not need to mod anything on these guitars. I also have a HWY1 Tele and it is my favorite guitar hands down!! You can't go wrong with one of these gorgeous instruments!!

If you're going to be hard on it to begin with how about a 50's or 60's roadworn tele!

My Tele is a Hwy 1 and it's a great looking, playing, sounding guitar. There's nothing wrong with the MIM's but I prefer the MIA's just on general principles.

Why buy cheap and upgrade things? If you MUST go that route buy a Squier and upgrade it. Same end result for less money.
