I am very new to this and just learning about instruments played by a close friend. Can some tell me the differences between the Telecaster and the Stratocaster. Friend has a 1960 Telecaster, and many acoustics. THANKS

I have both and here is my take. When I was younger I was totally into Strats. I loved the tremolo and doing dives and just the whole strat thing. As my playing evolved and I got more mellow I found that I didn't need the bells ans whistles of a Strat and moved to Teles. The Tele is a very simple elegant instrument. You have the classic twang from the bridge pick up to the mellow bluesy tone of the neck pick up. The Strat has 3 different pick ups so you can do some pretty amazing things with it. Alot depends on your style and what you feel comfortable with. I would say go and really play both then make your decision. Hope that this helps!

Try both guitars, it's what feels right to you that's important. I own both a Strat and three Tele's, you can guess my own preference on this

Although Teles and Strats have a single coil bridge pickup, they are nowhere near the same thing. The Tele bridge pickup will usually have a brass or some sort of metal plate underneath it. Control layout is a bit different and the strat has body contours, or beer gut cuts, while the Tele doesn't. Its all about personal preference and what feels and sounds best for you. Because personally, everything on a Strat is in my way, while a Tele is less cramped for me and more comfortable for me to play than a Strat.

bowlfreshner I am with you all the way. I played a Tele for 13 years before buying my first Strat and just like you said I found a lot of things in the way. I had to alter my playing just to get comfortable on a Strat the way I am on a Tele but as of 3 weeks ago I am finally there.

I used to hit the middle pup when picking which used to annoy the $@!& out of me until I read years ago Blackmore and Yngwie had the same problem and would sink the middle pup. Since I mainly play on the neck and bridge I have done it to all my Strats and that problem was solved. I also hate where the volume knob is on a Strat as I either knock down the volume or feel cramped if my pinkie is not between the knobs. Well three weeks ago someone posted Danny Gatton playing a Strat and he had no volume knob or pot and the guitar rewired. A few days later I had my tech do the same thing and I cant believe I never thought of doing this all these years as it is the greatest mod ever. I just put a little cool decal over the hole until my new pickguard comes, but it feels like a totally new guitar. I would advise anyone who has these issues to check this out.

Aside from the differences in appearance, they also sound completely different.

I own 5 Tele's 6 Strat's they all sound a little different to me. They have Greasebucket, deltatone and tbx and also waste of space tone controls. Buddy try as many as you can it's free. You will fine one sooner or later. GOOD LUCK.

They are both great guitars and will serve you well. Ultimately you will want both, but for now, try as many of both models as you can and go with what feels and sounds the best to you.

Their both good so its a win - win situation. Good luck with your decision and post a picture when you make your choice.

if i were you i would play both but tele is my choice of weapon, many people say a tele is only good for country but hey look at Kieth Richards he plays rock on it. a tele is an elegant guitar that is much more simpler than the stratocaster. i find the volume control on the strat though way to close to the bridge pick up. Me using my volume control often for effects find this a problem. but it is all personal preference.

If I had to spend the rest of my life with one electric, I'd take either one. Luckily that's not the case, so I have both.
