So I've been designing my next build, a hollow body telecaster, and I'm starting to think maybe it's a bad idea

After everything is said and done, it will cost a little over $1,800 u.s.

Right now the plan is a black true hollow body tele, front and back cream binding, the body is all mohagany, the neck is mohagany, fret board is a dark black ebony also with cream colored binding, Gibson '57 classic pup in the neck and '57 classic-plus in the bridge, tune-o bridge, cream pearloid pickguard

If you cant tell I'm going for a gibson hollow body telecaster hybrid style of guitar. 8)

Anyways....am I dumb for thinking about spending that much money on a mutt? Thoughts? Opinions?

I had the same emotion several weeks ago. Thought about building a Partsocaster. By the time I'd ordered up a fancy special chambered body with lots of figure in the wood and a beautiful neck I was already over $1500 before taxes and before hardware and electronics. I would have been looking a $2K before it was all over. For a no-name guitar.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Designing it is the easy part, getting it made is a whole other matter. If you are going to have someone else make it, $1,800 is actually a great price for a one of a kind, custom made guitar. But yeah I would think Hollowbodies due to their hollow bodies are a bit more costly to make even for a non-custom guitar. Sounds interesting though, keep us posted.

I've done this twice already with strats, both turned out great, hopefully this one will too. The price includes everything: case, luthier, etc. I'll make sure to come back and post some pictures once it starts coming together :D

That's certainly a novel idea especially with the Gibson pups, have you considered Pearly Gates Humbuckers?Either way you'll no doubt have something that no one else has,a sort of Tele Thinline/Gibson cross sans F hole,at least you didn't mention F hole,I'd say be adventurous and go for it.
Post pix when it's finished please.

The body will have one f-hole, so yeah the whole '72 thinline/Gibson hollowbody hybrid concept is the driving idea behind it.

Never looked into the pearly gates pups, I really love the sound of the alnico-2 '57 classics. But i will go listen to some pearly gates since you've mentioned them just to make sure they're not something that I would be more interested in.

Yeah Ryan,
that sounds like a classic looking guitar that would be fun to play and open up a whole range of tonal possibilities. Sounds worth it to me, considering you're paying a luthier. Think of it like this - even if you play it for only 10 years you're spending $180 per year to have an utterly unique guitar custom built for exactly your taste...
worth it! Can't wait to see the photos. 8)

Hi Ryan as far as I know the Pearly Gates pups are based on the pups in Billy Gibbons' Pearly Gates Les Paul, made to the same specs hence the name, they've gotten rave reviews.

guitslinger,
after reading some reviews and listening to some demo's of the pearly gates, i've decided i'm still going to stick with the '57 classics, but thanks for the info!

i'll keep updating this thread as i progress 8)
