To those of you who use the finger and thumb picking instead of flat picks, what would you recommend for someone just starting out to learn this techinque ? I find it a little confusing when it comes to the right hand. How do you determine what string to stop using the thumb pick, and then using the index, middle, and ring finger on the other strings ? Any help would be greatly appreciated cause I`m struggling with this for some reason. I`ve watched Peter Vogal on youtube, but their short clips and I`m missing something.
Thanks in advance.....Joe

Learn to distinguish chicken pickin' from the pinch.

When you do a pinch you mute a string with the tip of a finger of the picking hand. Could be the thumb or index finger. I use either depending on whether I'm picking up or down.

With chicken pickin' you're playing a series of rapid fire muted notes. The best way to do this is to lift the left (or fretting) hand off the fret while you pick the string. Keep the finger on the string. This mutes the string.

soggy..thanks so much for that useful information. I`m trying to find a teacher in this technique but these people say they can show me what I want to learn but when I go to them they start finger picking to Latin music...not exactly what I`m looking for. Thanks again for the help.
