I'm looking to buy my first tele. Can you all share any thoughts on the difference between the playability and tone of a basic American series tele vs an American Deluxe series?

Also, what is the significance of the wood type for the neck and body. If I buy one used, what are the questions to ask or the pitfalls to avoid?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Use your ears !
Always ask a friend (who plays guitar) to help you, especially when
buying second hand guitars.

I agree with fiinding a guitar friend to help, because that friend will care about what YOU want and they'll know what quality looks like and give you a completely honest opinion.

The best way to find a good tele that you'll love is go to the big city to a wide range music store and play everything that catches your eye, then go on musiciansfriend.com and buy one in the color you like. It's a great site where you can find guitars for at least 30% the price of music store instruments, and their site is more up to date than Fender's own!

Now the differance between the american standard and the usa deluxe series is that the deluxes have WAY more sounds and p/up combonatians. I like standars better because changing p/ups is way easier, and they're easier to use and enjoy. That would be my choice, but for a pro musician, I'd suggest the deluxe because it's more versitile. It's got every kind of sound you'd need so it's good for stage rather than switching guitars, and you can save by not buying more guitars.

About wood, I doubt that you'd be able to tell the differance in sound if you haven't been around many guitars. Most guitar players like that "old guitar feel". I sure do, and I enjoy scratches and checks. They add lots of fun character. Usually pawn shops don't carry old Fender guitars, but if you do, decide quick because it'll be gone before you can say "let me think about it".

So good luck and don't be afraid to use your gut!

If you can afford a Highway One, that would be my recommendation. But try them all. And get the one that feels good to you and fits your budget. Good Luck.

I have an 02 deluxe pre the s-1 switching. minw has a rosewood fretboard it has a darker more vintage sound, were as my am standard had a maple neck and it is brighter and grittier sounding. the darked sound of the deluxe makes the my amp break up faster

For a mid priced gem, I wholeheartedly recommend the 50's Classic.

ALMOST as good as an AVRI '52 for half the price!
