Hey all, I'm pretty new to the Telecasters single coil experience, and i'm wanting to learn about the tonal differences in different single coil pickups available for MIM Telecasters. I found a website where the difference between MIM Tele pickups and MIA Teles, are listed as follows: Standard series MIM has MIM standard single coils with slug pole pieces and ceramic magnet on bottom of coil. Mid pickup is reverse wound, and reverse polarity.

The standard series MIA Tele has MIA single coils with alnico magnets. middle pickup is reverse wound, and reverse polarity.

I'm not sure what production years the poster was describing there, but i'm gathering from what is stated, that the MIA pickups are superior to the MIM's. What i'm trying to figure out, is just how important is a possible pickup upgrade? I'm looking for opinions on the original equipment pickups as far as how good are they? I'm not too concerned about the ol' 60cycle hum or whatever, i guess i'm just hoping that the originals pickups are good enough for a while at least, perhaps until i develop an experienced ear regarding different pups? Thanks very much for any sage advice!

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

Too many owners are way too quick to change their pickups without first giving their OEM ones a chance. This applies equally to MIAs and MIMs. Regardless of country of origin, give your OEM pickups some time as you just might be perfectly satisfied with them as are millions of MIA and MIM owners alike.

On a directly related note: For some reason or other, there seems to be a stigma going around lately where all ceramic magnet pickups 'bite the big one' and only alnico magnet pickups are acceptable and desirable. This is absolutely NOT true and ABSURD to boot. Once again, here is a classic case of, "Infallible Web Dogma". Both magnet types have their places and applications.

If in time you find your pickup(s) lacking, FIRST make a list of what you do LIKE about them and which of these qualities you'd want still present with any pickup(s) change. Next, make a list of what you feel is LACKING in the pickup(s). From this point on, you could best be advised.

Hi martian! Wow, now THAT'S some seriously solid advice! Once again you have successfully demonstrated your ability to offer truly enlightened guidance that is not only educational, it is also a blessing in that it helps someone like myself avoid an expensive pitfall, that would be such an unnecessary waste of money. Thank you for your help again Guy, you never cease to amaze, and here's another good example of how knowledge is indeed power.

Always glad to help!

That's an outstanding picture you've posted. I'd really hate to be on the 'receiving end' of that, for sure!

Happy belated birthday!!!

Actually, it's a bass! Unfortunately, I have no pictures of the one I have.
Here's a photo of one just like it though:

http://www.chestnuthillguitars.com/phot ... G_7633.jpg

The only difference is mine is missing the cover over the bridge position mini-hb.

A very old friend of mine is a collector. I've worked on his guitars, basses and amps for well over 30 years now. I had mentioned to him that I was looking to get a cheaper bass as money for me is VERY tight these days. He objected to me having to own a 'cheaper' bass after all these years on general principle. He declared that after all the favors I've done for him over the years he will 'indefinitely loan' me this bass. He said he particularly selected this one for me because he knew I'd really like it; he was right. He even threw on a new set of flatwounds and dropped it off at my house. How about that?

That is one SWEET bass man, i can't even remember the last time i saw one like that! I have always loved that body style, very similar to the es335 like justin hayward of the moody blues uses a lot. I thought there was something i liked about you, the fact that your friend thinks enough of you to hand that bass to you speaks volumes about the content of your character sir, i'm not at all surprised to see that blessing coming your way, and there's no doubt in my mind that you have been very good to your friend, and it looks like he's rewarding your kindness toward him for so long. Good for you buddy! Enjoy!

+1 What gets me is half tyhe time these guys don't take into account the amp they are playing through and after hundreds of dollars in mods they go to a shop pick up a guitar that is all stock and plug it into an amp and bang...they found the tone. All my gear is stock and I have the tone I have been looking for...a Fender HWY 1 Tele straight into a Fender Super Champ XD and nothing but pure Fender MOJO!! :D

Martian, you have been pouring so much knowledge out in this forum in my direction, that i have learned more in a matter of weeks than i might have in years! man, that's of SUCH great value, i'd say priceless. And it doesn't stop ther either, there have been a lot of guys on here that have helped me in so many ways, i can't even list them all anymore, and it's only been a short while that i've been pestering folks around here! I'm also thrilled for you because of the way life has been for you financially of late, and i remember how you had to sacrifice so many instruments to get along. my heart went out to you, going through that, and i know how tough it can be in the times we're in, i've been laid off like so many others for a while. And i know what you mean by money being VERY tight. So yeah, i'm feeling pretty happy for you, and i think that you deserve it. I'll bet there's more than a few others around here that would agree.
