Want the features of the American Deluxe but the color selection is so limited. You can have any deluxe you want as long as it's triburst or cherry burst. And you can have any deluxe ash you want as long as it's 2-tone or butterscotch.

So I'm considering starting from scratch with perhaps a Warmoth bound body/neck and, since it's a custom, while I'm at it expand the guitar's capability by adding a 3rd pup, going with humbuckers I can split, plus S-1 switching with a Strat 5 way. Somehow, I am not really building a Telecaster if I go this way though.

Sadly, I could do without the extra customization if I could just get an American Deluxe with the color choices of the Standard. Granted, I could find more colors going older and used on Ebay or whatever but I don't buy guitars sight unseen unless they are returnable. Buying a Deluxe or Deluxe Ash and having it immediately stripped and refinished seems a little silly too.

Decisions decisions . . .

Anyone else suffer through this dilemma?

Either you learn to live with what you got, fix what you got to what you want, or build what you want from the ground up.

If you have the knowledge, skills, and tools, or really want to learn the knowledge, skills, and tools to do this, then go for it.

Well I have 4 Teles and 4 Strats and this year was the first in the last 7 that I bought a new Fender and I totally loved the Cherry Burst finish along with the belly contour and S1 switching. I actually feel they are making the best axes they ever made right now.

If you want something different then do it. Years ago I took my 85 62 reissue Tele and put Dimarzzio Fast Tracks in it and it became a classic rock beast and my #1 ax for more than a decade.

I have no doubt about this. I'm not concerned with Fender Quality. They have just dramatically reduced the number of colors available on deluxe models.

Years ago, when I bought my Deluxe Ash Strat, there were at least 6 or 8 different models to choose from as I recall. Now there are 2. There's like 14 different standard models.

I guess the cheapest solution would be to buy a standard the color I want and put the noiseless pups and S-1 functionality in it. Of course, then you still miss out on the rear and heel countours which ARE nice. So, it's like, once you go custom, why not just go all the way and build one exactly like you want it?

So, building one from scratch is the way I am leaning. I'd prefer to just buy what I want from Fender though.

you could look around your local shops and see if you can get a hold of a new-old stock one of what you want.

If you just want a different color, buy the Fender you want and get it refinished. A paint job in a basic color will run about $300. I wanted a red metal flake Strat so I just bought the Strat I wanted and got it refin'd.
