I bought my Tele used in 1989 in London. Was told at the time it was an 86 tele custom, but I was no collector (so didn't check) and it played nicely - still does. I'm now trying to find out what it is (even if its' a copy). The only number of any kind is on the back of the neck behind the base plate, not on the heel (50310). Can't figure out how to post images here - any suggestions?

That's a good looking Tele - thanks for the pictures.

Does it say Made In Japan on the back of the neck near the heel? The curve of how the back of the MIJ necks blend into the back of the headstock looks right for a '80s/'90s MIJ. The light shows this curve well in this picture:

One thing that strikes me as unusual is the combination of double-bound body ('60s) and maple fingerboard ('50s) but of course there were maple-cap necks in the '60s and there is a lot of variety in the offerings of MIJ/CIJ Teles.

Hopefully AjayTele will see this thread and comment.

Thanks George - nothing on the back of the headstock/neck...

Correction: I bought it in 1988.

It is a beautiful looking ax but I am confused about the make. If it was MIJ it would have the serial on the bridge plate or on the lower end of the neck above the back plate. Everything points to a 62 reissue, the binding, tuners and threaded saddles. That is my guess a MIJ 62 reissue hybrid as the neck might have been swapped as it should be rosewood and that is where the CIJ would be on that model as it looks later than a MIJ.

Been without power for two days so not able to check in... Took it to a luthier friend over the weekend and he concurs with straycat - the body appears to be MIJ but with a replacement neck. Thanks for all the feedback. Steve.
