If it says MIA...then its MIA not MIM. I`ve had 2 MIM Teles and theres a big difference between the two. From the necks to the hardware the MIA`s are much better in quality, not counting how the value goes up over time. I have a Hwy 1 now and have no intensions of getting rid of it whereas I found things I didn`t like with the MIM`s I had. Some may disagree with me on this but its just my personal feeling.

Don't want to hurt your feelings bro. MIM assembled in usa. According to North American free trade treaties only 50% of the parts have to be made in USA. I live in Canada were we have lost almost all of our manufacturing base to Mexico because free trade. You will too i'm afraid due to high labour & material cost's. By the way, were do you think north america gets most of our maple necks, sitka & spruce for most guitars ?( These woods are getting more scarse as time rolls on.) Take a real good guess. In another ten years we will be all playing all ply-wood guitar's from asia anyway.A lot of us do now. A lot of our main builders depend on pacific rim countries low labor rates and materials to prop-up their inferstrutcher. This has been going on for a lot years now I think. It's a common cost cutting parctice. I too have a lot of different guitars to compare with too. These hyw-1's are fine guitars, not at all like US,( more like mij guitars, I bet if any one on this forem owned one of these babies, they would know what I am talking about) I have three hwy-1 strats and one mim classic 70's strat same hard ware but no comparrison in workmanship, and would not say anything bad about either of them. I am not trying too be rude . I am just telling you the facts. Why don't you just call Fender and ask. It's like Toyota Corolas and Rav-4 are Made in Canada. NO assembled in Canada from parts made all over the world.

My feelings aren`t hurt, I respect the facts you posted. If these guitars are not completly MIA then they should let the consumer be aware of that. But having owned 3 other Teles...1 MIC...2 MIM...I can definately tell the differnce between them and the Hwy 1 I have now. As I mentioned, from the hardware to the neck itself there`s a big difference in the quality.
Thanks for that info.....

So what your saying is the American standard is probably only 51% made/assembled in the USA...I guess that goes for the Custom Shops too huh. Fender has said repeatly that the Highway One was made in the USA just like it says on the headstock..

I`m going to call the music store where I bought the guitar and ask them about this. If the guitars are not MIA when their stamped that they are that would be misleading the public and I doubt Fender would do that. But I`ll check it out and post what they tell me.

Hope your Fender dealer knows his stuff about Fender as my local Fender dealer (been selling Fenders for 30+ years) tells me that Fender finish coats, fret wires, decals are produced in the USA and sent to Mexico for the MIM's product lines..... so if you live in Mexico and buy a MIM Tele are you getting a true 100% MIM guitar?!

Also, large volumes of Ash is provided to MIM, Japan etc. for guitar mfg. Much of the lumber used by Fender USA comes from Canada!

OK so I order the Genuine Fender strap locks from the US Fender company in CA..... The same part # identified on the US Customs and signature models. The package says Genuine Fender, part numbers match whats installed on US made Fenders but on the back of the package is says "Made in China"! IN THIS CASE, I suspect our US made Fenders have parts being mass produced overseas for the US Fender factory!

The statement "Made in the USA" mainly is our assurance that "OUR" expected standards are being met, and that the completed assemblies have the finishing touch in a US Factory by "for the most part" American Citizens.

Asking your Fender salesman is no real assurance of learning the actual facts. He/She is not on step with the manufacturing facts.... They just deal with distributers and sell intruments and may have a sound knowledge of the instruments in general.

Only the Fender plant buyers who deal with their vendors knows the actual source of the components they use....Vendors are changed all the time and not all vendors are in the US.

I find this very disturbing, as true as it may be. To label a product MIA when its actually made from a mix of different origins is decieving to the consumer and it should not be allowed. So then even the more expensive guitars such as the Am. Standards and everything from there up are made from parts from different countries ?, which to me is not being totally honest with the consumer. And if you invest thousands of dollars on a custom guitar thinking its MIA and its made with parts from other countries just does not seem right. If Fender does this for savings, then those savings should be passed on down to the consumer. I read that Fender gets its Alder wood from Oregon, I`m beginning to wonder if that to is not true.

So now we have jumped from the original question of Highway One to custom shop?? If you have ever watched the factory tour (the link has been posted here numerous times) you know that everything about a custom shop is made in Corona, including winding the pickups.

As far as a highway one, the bodies, necks, and bridge blocks are definitely made in USA. The rules about "Made in" versus "assembled in" are very complex and confusing. I know in construction it used to be 85%. So if 15% of your MIA Highway One is parts made in another country, are you REALLY going to feel ripped off or deceived? C'mon get real.
Tempest in a teapot, based on ignorant assumptions.

At this point it don`t matter. I like the Hwy 1 for what it is and how it feels and sounds and I`m very happy with it. I would recommend the guitar to anyone who wants to get one.
I appreciate all the facts posted here and I have learned from it. Thanks

It really doesn't matter to me. I feell Fender is an honorable company and love thier products. I'm sure Gibson does the same with the Studio LPs. We can thank Mr Bill Clinton and his NAFTA free trade agreement for things like this and our great countrys decline in products and employment issues.
