Almost ready to start this project Tele!!

I have all the parts on the way or I am in the process of saving for them.
The pickups are a handwound custom tele in the neck, and a rewound custom Seymour Duncan (in the shop now a local guy from Brandonwound pups is doing it) for the bridge. The parts are all chrome. And yes....70%
of the parts are Fender, 30%Not....but it's ..All American....I was thinking doing jell'd white stain w/ a gold pickguard.

I have this 50's spec Ash body, I would like to take a poll on what kind of color combo's everyone likes.

That's a nice enough grain to show off so I'd go with a transparent finish in a warm color. Warm meaning red, yellow, brown or orange hues.

What have you decided on for a headstock shape?

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Well not exactly....I am certainly open to suggestions.
Maybe a 70's tele style or a big CBS style.

I have to agree. Please don't cover that body with a solid color. If your not into natural wood finishes a transparent color or washed stain would look nice. Maybe even a Surf Green? A wash is basically painting it then wiping off the paint exposing the grain. Practice on scrap first though. Enjoy your Project and truly make it a One Off 8)

I think it looks like a Stewmac Kit. Better Quality than GFS

NO, the body and (brand new) loaded Fender control were Ebay purchase, the neck is from Grizzley, the bridge and tuners I took off Fenders from past jobs. Other assorted parts who knows....
I may have have to go with better tuners.....

YES!!!! Exactly what I have been planning. I would never think of covering that grain, I think everyone I've showed it to would be pi**ed if I did. If I wanted a solid paint I would use poplar or some crap.
I LOVE the grain of the Ash body. Any suggestions on what brands of wash??

I saw a vid where they used dyes and sanded it to show the grain, sanded and blended with other dyes to create a sunburst. I will post the link here when I get home.

I was looking at some custom colors of Minwax they were latex which would work great as a wash but I had to get a quart for them to custom mix it. So I opted for a standard stain for my flame maple body. You may want to use a preconditioner so you get a even penetration of the color.
You said the body was off ebay. Did it happen to be from Delta luthiers?

Minwax does have some nice colors! i was looking at that same chart earlier....decisions..... decisions.
The tele body was from Red Dirt Guitars out of Texas. Here's the link if you want to check his stuff out. http://www.8fdtexas.com/Wood-Tone/Bodies/Default.htm

Here is a link to the sunburst technique from Fine Wood Working Magazine's site. These guys do some crazy detailed work, not unlike Ceri. 8)

Hey BastardN,

Thanks for the links. That sunburst stuff is cool, maybe if I was going to do a few projects but a lot of stuff for one guitar.

I heard of this site from some other thread, and I've happily wasted countless hours on it: http://www.nymphusa.com/kisekae/8.0/tele8001/base.asp

Totally customize a virtual Tele (or others). Pickups, hardware color, body wood, color (solid, burst, relic) & transparency of finish, and lots more. Register w/email and you can save your creations, and modify them at will.

No, I don't have a stake in this site  , just love it!

Keep us posted with your project. Peace!

You're welcome, for sure. I suspect that this site would save anybody working on a project a ton of grief. Or just provide a few hours of happy diversion for us "armchair luthiers", of which I am definitely one
