Hi,

I was looking at my tele the other day pondering about any other mods i might like to make, then hit it me. If im honest i never use the volume knob (other than simply to "turn the guitar off") , so could i make better use out of it? What i was kinda thinking was using it to phase almost between the two pickups (instead of using a pickup selector). The idea being that turned all the way round lets say clockwise would give the neck pickup, and all the way anti-clockwise would give bridge, and then you could use in between to get the exact balance you wanted. Does anyone know this would be possible and where i would find out how to do the electronics for it?

Obviously i'v now got a useless pickup selector which i assumed could be used as a simple on off switch, maybe even have one setting as a boost for solos etc? (no idea if you can do that tho)

Basicly iv im asking if anyone even knows if this is possible? been done before? or where i would need to go to find out more about getting it done?

thanks

Alex

When you say, "phase", I know you mean to, "dial in and out" rather than the electronic definition of phasing two pickups.

There's two ways you can do it. The first is with a pan pot (a ganged pot) which works the way you've described in terms of dialing the pickups in or out or, you can wire both pots you already have in there the way a Jazz Bass's volume controls are wired. One pot would be for the neck pickup whereas the other would be for the bridge pickup. You would use either to blend each pickup into or out of the mix to taste where one wouldn't cause the volume of the other to decrease.

As to making the toggle an on/off switch, that can be easily done too.

As to making the toggle a booster, you have what are called, "passive" pickups in your Tele. Meaning, they have no preamp(s). Therefore, you cannot add anything power or frequency wise to the circuit beyond its normal '10', you can only take away from its '10' all the way down to its normal '0'.

Where to get schematics? For the pot configurations, you'd have to Google. However, finding one to change the toggle into an on/off switch, I don't know if you'd find something like that.

Neither of these links answer your questions exactly but they might be of some interest anyway.

Here's a wiring diagram of the original Fender Broadcaster wiring with a blend pot:

Here's a booster:

I think you would use a stereo pan. With each pickup being right or left. Then use the selctor swich to switch phasing. ie; series or parallel wiring.
