After giving the SCNs in my American Deluxe Ash Tele a chance to win me over (which they didn't), I started searching for a new set of pickups for it.

After extensive research, I narrowed it down to either a Dimarzio Area T w/an Area T neck or Virtual Vintage 54 pro and a set of Barden Tele Pickups. Though I've been a Dimarzio user for 25+ years (have of a set of Areas in my Strat which I like), the Bardens really intrigued me and a lot of people rave about them.

I bit the bullet and bought a set of Bardens and it was well worth. The range of tones available from them is amazing. They can handle anything from country to jazz to metal just by tweaking the guitar's volume and tone controls. Having a versatile rig helps too. I also like how the output of the neck pickup balances with the bridge pickup.

The neck pickup was too weak compared to the bridge pickup.

The bridge didn't have quite enough "twang" for my liking and sounded a little "brittle/thin" to my ears.

I fiddled with various amp models and effects to no avail.

I put a set of Bardens in a MIJ tele, they sounded outstanding. The most hi-fi sounding pickups you can buy. They are definitely for clean playing, and any glitches in your technique will be highlighted with these pups. A great set of pups. On a side note- I had them in the tele for about a year, pulled it out of the case, and the neck pup was dead. I sent a note to JB (old company), he requested that I send the pup to him and he would repair or replace. I send them, tracking confirmed, and never received a reply. This was at a time when he disappeared from radar. Never heard back, never followed up, even after emerging with new company. Although I loved the pups, the lack of response, even to acknowledge the receipt of the pup, left a sour taste. I long since replaced the pup with a Harmonic Design that is well balanced with the JB, and have always had great dealings and contact with Scott Peterson, excellent company to do business with.

I had some Bardens and eventually swapped them out for a set of Don Mare's Hayrides.
