Ok, here is the deal, I have never been a big Zepplin fan. Due to you guys and the other fine members of this forum I down loaded some Zepplin from iTunes in order to broaden my horizions. One tune in particular "Stairway To Heaven", why because Page did the solo on a Tele....CC, Ceri, here is where I am lost like last year's Easter egg is it because I am a Yank(LOL) that I just don't get the lyrics! Here are some examples..."If theres a bustle in your headgerow don't be alarmed now it's just a spring clean for the may queen"??? What the heck does that mean?? Also "Your head is humming and it won't go in case you don't know its just the piper's calling you to join him"?Who is the piper and why should I join him? I mean, I like to think I am a little educated but I am so clueless on this one...help me!!! LOL

Here's what I could find... Ceri's probably the man... CC may have some insight too...

"A bustle in your hedgerow," the enigmatic line in Led Zep's "Stairway To Heaven" classic, has mystified music mavens for decades. Hopefully, the following will sprinkle a scintilla of elucidation and edification upon this cryptic conundrum.

A hedgerow is a hedge that surrounds many estates in Britain.

Bustle, or noise or activity, used in this sense, means a disturbance close to home. Something's happening in your world!

It's just a spring clean for the May Queen.

Spring cleaning is an old domestic ritual cleaning meant to do away with the troubles of the past year and prepare for the coming year, and often includes disposing of old, useless things that have been lying around.

The May Queen was a maiden chosen by a village to represent the hopes and potential for the coming year. She was a symbol of beauty, spring and new beginnings.

I imagine the piper refers to the Pied Piper of Hamelin...

Hey CC - check out my post under acoustics...

Cool topic...

Just remember that Zep wasn't about the lyrics. Jimmy had an idea of where the next evolution in music should take us and that is what they did. It was all about the music. That is why 90% of their lyrics was borrowed from old blues tunes starting from the days of Robert Johnson. Their music is the blues retold with our musical technology and Jimmy, Robert, Bonzo and JPJ's genius, and nothing else. But that is exactly why they are so relevant. New music does not necessitate totally new initiatives, but rather re-invention.

I.t.o. Stairway... Music only Jimmy could write, and btw, Robert Plant sang the lyrics to the tune on the first evening Jimmy played it to him. "The words just hung around long enough for the right music" is what he said.

I've been a Zeppelin fan forever and I still don't understand what half of their songs are about. :D

Beyond the obvious blues stuff and screams and moans, it seems to me that a lot of Plant's lyrics are about faries and goblins and other mythical topics.

Even more confusing than Zep lyrics are their song titles. It's fun to play "name that tune" with Zeppelin songs since so many song titles are hard to associate with the song, at least to casual listeners who've heard them on the radio for decades but there's no easy tie-in to the lyrics like there is with "Stairway".

"Trampled Underfoot" is a good example. Anyone who has listened to classic rock FM radio in the last 30 years knows the song, yet how many can name the title? Try it with your friends and see. Or try it with yourself. Can you hum a few bars right now?

I didn't think so. There are a ton of Zep songs like that.

Enjoy your descent into the world of Zeppelin, airbornestrat. It's a long strange trip. I recommend the DVD from a few years back called simply "Led Zeppelin". It's has footage from old Zep shows from the early days where Jimmy Page wore argyle sweater vests to the later stuff where he could barely stand up.

the 'bustle in the hedge-grow' I always interpreted as (because bustle is activity and like Ricky said, hedge-grow is simply a small hedge/bush) that there is something going on, unseen, in whats growing around us.

Just my 2 cents bro!

The songs about some smackhead woman. I wouldnt put too much store in the lyrics being about rural British traditions.

Bustle in the hedgerow/spring clean for the may queen. Maybe mice fleeing impending danger. As is usual when you suprise a rodent.

Also "Your head is humming and it won't go in case you don't know its just the piper's calling you to join him.
Clearly refers to addiction.
