I haven't had a chance to try a New American Special yet. Is there much of a difference between the Special and a Highway 1?

I haven't tried the new one, but my guess is yes. Did you check the product specs at the top of this page?

I did... I admit I'm kind of a novice, but the specs looked pretty close to me.

Different pickups, different finish. I think Id stay with the Hw1s (they are also cheaper!), unless you really love Tex-Mex pups.

Hwy 1 has the nitro finish and the Special has a poly or Gloss Urethane Finish. The Hwy 1 has alnico III pups the Special has Tex Specials. The Hwy 1 is $100 cheaper. More color choices with the Hwy 1. I'd say try both and get the one you like best. I have a Hwy 1 and it's a great guitar.

Has anybody had a chance to compare the two yet?

They do feel similar, but the tone is certainly different. The Special seems to have a bit more high end complexity than the Highway One, but the Highway One seems to be a bit warmer sounding. The American Special's neck feels a little more substantial to my hands. Bottom line: They're both great guitars, but I'm fond of Glossy finishes, and would pick the Special because it seems to have more of a distinct tone. The Highway One's tone felt a little 'flat' to me in comparison.
