Google his name. Sometimes they list the gear the artist uses.

I always thought that his sound varied from his early days with Ricky Nelson (on the Ozzie & Harriet Show) to his latter days with Elvis and others.

This gear site of his might be of some help :

Well it will be hard to get his sound down exactly unless you play with finger picks which he does and that has a lot to do with his sound. He was also the first or one of the first to play with mixed gauge strings as he used to mix Banjo strings with guitar strings for a very lite gauge, that with some slap back echo and your set.

I don't think they even made an unwound G back then?

At a seminar in Toronto I heard Albert Lee say Burton uses '8's on his guitar. That's probably one of the reasons he gets that tinny sound.

James Burton discusses all of this and more at his web site. Although he played good Telecasters for years, Fender has been supplying him with signature models since around 1969, starting with the famous "Pink Paisley."

His most recent signature model is called the James Burton Upgrade. It has three James Burton model single coil pickups, a five position switch and an S-1 switch. I don't know what makes the pickups sound any different. To me they sound like Telecaster pickups, with a middle Stratocaster pickup thrown in.

Burton says he strings his guitars as follows on the top three strings:

.009, .010, .012

That makes the B and G strings super light. A stock G string in a set of 9-42s is a .016. This makes the B and G strings much easier to bend. The low E is also lighter than stock at .038. That's right from the man himself.

Frankly, Burton could crank his signature sound out of anything, including a Squire Affinity.
