I am trying to decide whether or not to get en american tele or a gibson les paul. Can anyone tell me what's better about the telecaster that the les paul doesn't have?

What a coincidence!!! I had the same problem when I went to the animal shelter to get a new pet. Although I couldn't make up my mind which one I wanted, the cat, or the dog. I finally settled on the cat, I liked the cats meow better than the dogs growl. So I went with the cat.

Man, that decision shouldn't be hard at all. The telecaster can do things the Les Paul can't and the LP can do things the tele can't. You'll have to figure this one out yourself.

These two guitars are so different (not to mention the price), that it would be advisable to own both if possible.

Speaking as a completely biased Tele guy who also owns many LPs, I'd say that if it's a choice situation, go with the Tele.

Why?

1. They are cheaper
2. They stay in tune
3. You can get better sounds out of a Tele (and can get similar sounds to a LP using efx pedals)
4. Most Teles are lighter
5. The 25 1/2 scale length is better.
6. Teles look cool.

Enough said?

The tele to buy? well almost any are acceptable, but the CIJ SPL Thinline is probably the most versatile.

I like to play a lot of Guns N Roses and I know that Slash uses a Les Paul, but do you think that if I slapped on a set of Seymour Duncans on a tele I could get that warm slash sound (with the help of a fender blues junior)?

Hi, Hottrod
I have a Les Paul Studio for MANY years and last Feb, I decided to sell it coz I didn't like it anymore, bad sound, heavy and so on...
I bought the Telecasters I talked of in some other thread which are totally awesome. Then I bought a Strat, then I had my Les Paul tuned by a master of the art, then started playing it again!
The result is very clear:
1-I keep my LP
2-I keep my Tele
3-I keep my Strat
4-I play as much as possible my 4 guitars equally, making some kind of a turnover because each and every one of them has its own sound which appeals to me this day more than the day before (or after) and because depending on my day's mood, this one fits better than the other!
Hope this helps,
Frenchie
