I've been playing a lot of open-G tuned stuff so I've had only 5 strings on my Tele (per Keith Richards). Should I be concerned at all about the neck given that the tension is a bit uneven due to the lack of a low E string?

With it just being one string gone the other 5 should keep that tension on the neck of your tele and string "shouldn't" cause any damage to your tele but I would still consider replacing it soon

Nope.

Nothing to worry about.

I have a Tele strung with only 5 strings "a la Keef" that I play all the time and have done so for at least three years. 8)

Never looked like having a problem, so I would say that Tele necks are probably a lot tougher than some would believe.

Like others said, it shouldn't be too big of a deal, but I would consider just designating a guitar to this tuning...like you probably need an excuse to get another guitar...but this is a good excuse to get another one...

If you play live and want to play specific songs that have been originally recorded with an open G guitar, playing a 5 string gives an unmistakable authenticity to the sound.

Obviously there are several Rolling Stones numbers which this applies to, but not as obviously there are other songs that also benefit from a Guitar tuned in open G and with only 5 strings. Two good examples being "Hot Legs" by Rod Stewart and "Pink Houses" by John Mellencamp.

So having a "spare" MIJ TL-67 (a Keef replica) or maybe a 72 Custom RI sitting around with 5 strings on it isn't such a bad idea!

You're right about that for sure. I've seen a number of guys on youtube play with the 6th string tuned down to D, and I've even tried it, but to get that true Keith sound you need to be able to wail away on the rhythm without worrying about muting that 6th string. I've been playing the past couple of months with both my Teles in open G and only 5 stings on them. Got that paired with a Barber 1/2 Gainer and my SRRI and it sounds pretty authentic. Currently have my Strat dedicated to the standard tuning stuff.

I can't resist it...here's one of my bands doing Hot Legs at a local Jam night.

See if you can hear the distinctive 5 string sound. Try to ignore the errors
